During the war, Isamu was set to a concentration camp.
After the war, he submitted his design for the Hiroshima Dome Museum, but his work was denied because he was "American".
One side he was accused to be Japanese, and the other side he was denied because he was American. I can only imagine how he was thinking of his own identity.
However, he ...
... feeling like this ritual is like a beautiful art with a full of everyone's wishes, hopes and appreciation. This is how they have done it for a long time. I, as an outsider, just come in and see this ritual, and I scream "this is cruel!". I think that's not right. I mean, Ainu people have appreciated the existence of bears because bears bring them food, fur to protect from cold weather, and medicine. Sapporo, Hokkaido, Japan beachmonkieWe're in Sapporo now and it's absolutely amazing. However the hostel is charging ten yen per freaking minute to use the internet - which adds up to roughly $10 AUD an hour. So there won't be any further posts until we reach Tokyo again in another three days.
Missing you all,
Tom and Rachael

We took lots of breaks and I managed to keep hiking even though I'm pretty sure I had altitude sickness from ...
Sapporo, Hokkaido, Japan kateinjapanIt had snowed a lot in the night and was continuing to snow. The train left at 7.30 and took considerable longer than the last train going in the other direction took. Sapporo to Hakadake took 3 hours 50 minutes. The trains in Hokkaido were not up to scratch compared with the rest of Japan, they didn't have any Shinkansen and the trains they did have were diesel, and rocked around a lot. The view ...
Sapporo, Japan ashermj... Park. In Sapporo, I paid a visit to not only the festival venue, but also Old Government Building, the Clock Tower and Sapporo Olympic Games venue. I also visited a glass-making factory in Otaru. I went there with my uncle and aunt and it was the first and last time to travel with them.
