    ... train back to Beppu, via Oita was one of the best train rides we've had for scenery. The layout of the carriage meant that there was a large glass panel at the front, allowing for excellent views as the train whizzed along the track, past farms and through jungly vegetation.


    In the evening, we treated ourselves to a cheeky Baskin' Robbins icecream after dinner (they do an amazing amaretto flavour over here), before mooching around the mall. ...

    ... resort, with over one hundred million litres of near boiling water gushing from more than three thousand springs each day, harnessed for use by homes for swimming pools, heating and medicinal purposes, as well as the dozens of public and private baths available.

    As our bus arrived in the thermal area, huge spouts of steam were visible in all directions. We headed off to one Onsen, which I was determined to enjoy - despite a very reluctant Arthur dragging behind!

    ... else to fix it. They are there for the 30 seconds of self satisfaction that they get somehow by bringing down someone else's day.

    As luck would have it, no one in the onsen that night felt like they needed any self satisfaction.

    So I was able to lay back, look up at the bright white stars and silhouette of the mountain, breath in steam, laugh with a friend, and have my face flush more red than a cherry, and truly relax.

    I can't wait for the next onsen I slip into ...

    We've had an amazingly epic adventure and are feeling very mixed emotions! Our last day was as extreme as Japan seems to be. The hotel owner very kindly offered us a five minute drive to see Mount Fuji this morning before we headed off to tokyo. An extraordinary mountain and active volcano which last erupted in 1708.     On a lighter note, this is Hagi a town filled with pottery and orange groves. A place to sooth the soul with beauty. Bizarrely there was a gigantic modern building dedicated to ceramics in this quiet little island town. Incredible professional pottery in the museum and shops overflowing with more pots. No vanilla ice cream in this town, only orange. Made a change from seeing green tea ice ...
