It was nice to have the option to buy Wi-Fi for the night, but the location with construction surrounding the hotel was a bit of a nucense. The rooms were very nice, though, which made up for it! Also, the room service was delicious!

... excuse the pun. It was a three and a half hour journey - a downward descent of our uphill train journey and so lovely to drive through all the villages that we had seen in the distance only the day before from the train. The scenery was breathtaking - think Swiss Alps, Austria…..but with numerous monkeys lining the roadside and waving us on our way. We arrived in very good time at Chandigarh railway station. Chandigarh is a city and the ...

... weifght of my bags almost had me ready to faint at this point. Hayley said “How are we supposed to know if this is the right train?” “I don’t know, ask the idiots; ask the army”

We saw a conductor stood in the doorway to a carriage, we asked if this was the train to Rishikesh. He looked at us blankly, the engine roared to life. “Rishikesh? Does this train go there?” He looked puzzled, we showed him a piece of paper with the name ...

... in our free time that we had not yet had time to shop. So, Jackie and I conspired all day to arrange this even though we only would have a few hours. Our hosts are wonderful and protective of us as guests in their country, so we really had to work to convince them to let us go to the outdoor market. They agreed with escorts of course and we took one of our students. She is a very independent minded outspoken Indian mammographer that weaves in and out of the busy Chandighar ...

... to see. Currently tourists have to apply for a permit and this is virtually impossible to obtain. He says he will take us there!

We walk to the Secretariat building picking up the Canadian couple along the way, narinder gets us into the building, no problem. First he takes us to see them making Chapati's for all the workers downstairs and we even have a go at it. Narinder wraps these up in some newspaper and pops them in his bag. Then we go ...

    Chandigarh.....supposedly city beautiful?!

... all. The reservoir was small and uninteresting and the rock sculpture garden was equally dull and too busy to enjoy. We could have done a whistle stop tour and seen all the supposed sights in the city within four hours, so dull were the attractions. Unfortunately for us we'd booked our hotel on line and were stuck in the most boring city in India for three days!

This was the first planned city we'd ever visited and to be fair, it was planned badly. The grid system ...
