... going back and no-one telling me til the next morning over breakfast!)... When the boat departed from Koycegiz I was the only person on it - aside from the driver/captain and his mother (who was also the cook; the waitress and a better skilled sailor/navigator than her son who on the way back, slept at the back of the boat while she steered!!). I was on my own for an hour as we sailed out ...

6 ladies, two men, two weeks, only 1 Turkiye!

I was really overdue my holidays, finally getting to take it in October and I just signed up to two weeks of not doing much in Turkey with a couple of friends in a group. For me though not doing much isn't my cup of tea so I took every chance to re-live my old Turkey memories, from food, sights, sea, dancing and ahem, yes the men, again :)

Please come back soon as I update all the stories from the two weeks. Thanks.

Ruined by Tourism

... There have been quite a few places I have been and been grateful for the big and small things I am used to - whether it be a well prepared meal, a western style toilet or even just people able to speak English. I think the problem starts when an area actively TRIES to be a tourist haven.

In this case the local shops all stop trying to be pleasant shops of whatever culture or vibe they might normally choose, but instead try ...

pamukkale is expensive.

Awoke near Pamukkale and paid a scandalous amount to get in. 10 pounds each to see some tepid pools of water. Even the initially striking karstic rock was pretty much covered in faint brown footprints. The extorsion didn't end there as it turned out that Cleopatra's Baths, the hot spring at the top was an additional cost. We thought we could get away with just paying for one of us to get in and then swapping the ...

Well my dear guests, they sat there all night until the emperor finally woke up and they could go. This went on each time the emperor went to the show, each night for 5 days.

"Well, my deal guests, this was incredibly frustrating, the emperor falling asleep, my dear guests, and they had to do something about it. So finally, they all ...

A Hike Above Kas on May 13

... line above Kas.

The initial scenery was quite fine, looking back down to the sea and goat herds in the valley. But the landscape was brutal. I was climbing and walking in weathered limestone and thorn bushes. Cross country, no trail.

This exposed weathered limestone is a wicked substance. You dare not fall or trip. To do so would be to puncture or tear your flesh to shreds. In fact, I had the notion that the myth of Marsayas had arisen from the fact of someone falling ...

March, April, May: Konya, Ankara, Kas

I'm back on the road again. But so very far behind in attending to this travel blog that it has become impossible to keep up with much detail. But what follows here is an attempt to encapsulate the events of the past month and a half. Well, almost two months, really.

I last left off in late March when I broke my travel routine, of moving south along the west coast of Turkey, to go in to Ankara. Two reasons: the main one was that my ATM card was ...
