    Crete: What an amazing island!

    ... loved it. We stayed there for several hours, walking about and seeing the sights. There were lots of people lining up at the banks while we were there too. Queues of locals getting out cash from ATMs while the banks were closed. Lots of shops were asking for cash only purchases too. Not sure how this whole Greek/European Union thing is going to pan out, but I feel very sorry for the people who live here.

    ... as though we have no real purpose. We are trying to focus on the many amazing things to see in the last little bit, but thoughts of a return to school, work, and routine are creeping back. We now tell people it was probably just a titch too long, but I am certain that come September 10 or 11, we will be lamenting our return. We miss you all and will see you soon.     ... port and an old city that is not so old as much of it was destroyed in WWII- the Battle of Crete . A walking street up from the port, a few ok side streets but nothing fantastic. The old city walls still exist to an extent so did a wander around the top of them.

    Took a bus out of town to the village of Archanes and went for a wander around it and its surrounds (amongst the olive groves). Nice little village but saw it all in 15 ...

    Today we had a two hour drive along the highway to Knossos, an archeological site from the Minoan age. It was a Minoan palace that was nearly 4000 years old. It was home to a king who asked Apollo for a bull to sacrifice to honour Apollo. The bull was so beautiful though that the king sacrificed another one,which made Apollo angry. He then made the queen fall in love with the bull, which produced the Minotaur, a half human, half bull, which lived on human blood. ...
