... until December when she will get her permanent residency documents. Then she can get health care, a job, financial help for her and her children, etc. So we have hope of a better future for her and her children. In the meantime, we do what we can with what God has blessed us with. Yorleny also suffers from anemia and has to take expensive shots about every 6-8 months to build up her blood. Her 9 year old daughter also has anemia but has responded very well to just vitamins with ...

La Pura Vida

... by some animal, without a doubt, at 3:30 in the morning every day. And any of you who are saying to yourselves "I wish I would have done the Peace Corps." You still can. And you should. This is a truly unique experience and is made even more so with the awesome group of people I'm here with. Not one time have I questioned my decision to come here and hopefully I won't ever have to. I saw a volunteer who on their blog dedicated each entry ...

Ocean swapping

... wanders around town with a blender hoping someone will join him for margheritas. Like I said, it's an odd place. Anyway I ended up attempting to dance the salsa (fail) before going back to the apartment. An interesting night. I felt dreadful the next day so decided to stay an extra night. The other girls all left so I found a new hostel with a super-comfy hammock which I lazed in all day while the monkeys scampered around and threw mangoes at the roof of the nearby ...

Zipping about in Monteverde

... up sprinting the stairs - incline - cause we had to pee so bad. It was like the Inca Trail all over again but the goal was to pee. After visiting the reserve, we walked down the road 5 minutes to the restaurant to have a speedy lunch and got our gear on for the zip lining . They had lockers for your things and I would totally recommend using it as you don't want to carry anything while zipping around the 11 diff zip lines there. They won't allow you to go a head with ...

Long and Crazy Trip

... the hotel had a bunch of tourists they were taking somewhere so the van was not available. I waited... and waited... and waited. At 7, I asked when my car was gong to arrive and the front desk clerk called him again. Finally, at 7:15, he got there. The front desk people called Interbus but couldn't get through, but they said they would keep calling to let them know I was on my way. I think they felt bad for me; they were so nice. The kid ...

A mellow Jungle canoe ride... and Monkey pee

... s Brinks home security alarm), a couple toucans, a couple caimans (4 ft. long crocodiles), howler monkeys and larger spider monkeys, and a white siberian tiger. Ok, just kidding on the tiger. There are indeed black jaguars in these jungles but no sightings recently. Just the rumor of them keeps me from walking thru the trails alone. There was a cool moment when a beautiful iridescent blue butterfly approx 7 inches wide fluttered thru ...

Camping in Cahuita

(English) How I love my weekends with the spanish couple...they always find the best deals in town! Through a friend of the spanish couple, we managed to find a camping place that has shower facilities and a cooking place (so rustic that I can´t even call it a kitchen) for 1000 colones each (that´s 2 USD) in a hidden corner in Cahuita....super cheap for a touristic place like Cahuita. I got to borrow Maribel´s super hammock that comes with a waterproof fly and a ...
