Travel Blogs from San Francisco
We have spent the last few days exploring what San Francisco has to offer. We've had 2.5 days in the freezing cold city... Our first full day we had tickets for Alcatraz on the first boat at 8:45. We arrived bright an early on the tram grabbed coffee and waited in line.. We had to go up the front of the boat for the trip over unfortunately it was …
Hi all, Still in California, but its a while different beast up here! The temperature is 15 deferred lower and its that much windier! We have been in San Francisco since Monday (today being Saturday) and still not running out of things to do. Have to say, getting into the city was the trickiest moment of the trip so far. Roads don't just run north/ …
Feeling oh so delicate we got up grabbed a one of the worst cups of coffee I have ever had from a Starbucks and headed to Fisherman's Wharf. We were able to catch a wooden tram (route F) which was pretty cool as we'd caught a sleek looking 50s one the day before. As geeky as it sounds I rather like trams.
We headed for pier 33 to pick up …
Los Angeles to San Francisco is really just a hop, skip and a jump away.. 7 hours by car and 1 hour by plane. We left work Friday night and headed straight to the airport. We had a coupon for Easy LAX Parking for 50% off making it a reasonable $18 for our cars two night stay.
After a hard week at work, LAX is probably not the place to …
The good thing about going to bed early, is you get up early. We had a lot to pack into today our only full day in SF so we had to get going.
Our hotel had a hostel like buffet breakfast with coffee, juice, cereal and toast. We grabbed some toast and coffee before heading out into the thankfully sunny day.
One of the great …

Great location, small rooms with comfy beds, very friendly and helpful staff. I recommend asking for a quiet room as the streets can be quite noisy.

Historical Traveler Reviews The Stratford San Francisco
A Pleasant Surprise
The Stratford hotel was recommened to us by business associates who had stayed there recently. We were there for business and pleasuse with our 4 yr old daughter and found the rooms pleasing and most comfortable. The Complimentary continematl breakfast in there spacious breakfast room was varied, satisfing and very well presented. Staff memebers were always on hand to answer questions or recommend places I could take the little one while my husband was on business. The location is second to none at Union Square but our biggest surprise was all this for a most affordable rate.
Dirty carpets and smelly sheets. Very disappointing!
When I first entered the room, I felt disappointed right away. Not only is the room small, but the carpets and sheets were obviously dirty and smelly. Though this hotel's location is a bonus, but I will never check-in at this hotel again. If you expect a clean room for your vacation, do not try this one.
Everything you need at good rates
Stayed here last September and although the hotel is quite basic, you could not expect anything better for the price and therefore I would definitely recommend this hotel.
It comprised good staff, basic, clean and comfortable rooms, and best of all an excellent location in the heart of Union Square with easy access via taxi, metro or tram to everywhere that you would wish to go, in order to explore this fantastic city.
My husband and I are not picky when it comes to hotels, but we felt we really picked a bad one with the Stratford. We have stayed in several hotels in the Union Square area and this one was definitely the worst. Upon arriving, we found the front desk staff not very inviting, and the garage that was supposedly available to park our car was nonexistant. That is not something that typically bothers us, but when we got to our room we were dissapointed some more. The room was tiny, which again, no problem. BUT, the sheets STUNK! It smelled like mold had been growing on them for weeks. We were hoping they would be changed for our second night, but the smell was on the second night's sheets too. It was gross. The bed was not very comfortable either. We're 26 and 27 years old and we had neck problems after waking up there two days in a row. Another annoying thing is that the remote was nailed down into the bedside table as well as the alarm clock. The problem with this was that the glowing red neon lights of the alarm clock were glaring in my face when I was trying to sleep, and you can't turn the stupid thing around because it is nailed down! Our bathroom had the dingiest flourescent bulb which shed harldy any light as well. On the plus side, it is in a great location, but we have stayed in several other hotels in that area for the same price that blow this one away. This was the first hotel I've ever felt I needed to write a review about.
Ideal for my requirements
Stayed here for a long weekend at a bargain rate. They have a very friendly staff. I agree the rooms are small, but they are clean and comfortable, with TV, Phone, Hairdryer, sink in room and a seperate bathroom (which was spotless). Patrons complain about room size but for one I have never had the need to hold a cocktail reception in my hotel room. I believe The Stratford provided me with exactly what I paid for.
If I wanted more, there were plenty of 5 star hotels within 1 block.
They charged three times that of The Stratford of course.

Disappointing, not what I expected
The location can't be beat, but the hotel itself was quite a disappointment: carpets were heavily stained, the bedcovers were dirty, and a not offensive but strong smell was throught. Had to change rooms due to mildew in bathroom (allergies). If you can't find anything else, it's bearable, but for my next rip, I'll pay a bit more and get something nicer.
The desk staff acknowledged my arrival somewhat coldly, but perhaps it was just due to one of those long days, since others on the staff were friendly and informative.
The Stratford looks adorable from the outside, just as it did on its website. The inside is fair, but more in tune with traveling 20-somethings. When I checked in I asked for a quiet room as I just stayed in hotel in Vancouver with construction outside. Though the the man at the desk seemed sincere the room he checked me into had to be a joke. it was right next to ther staircase & kitchen-dining room, on the second floor. i've never swicthed a hotel room in my life but the noise and stuffiness (the only window faced a brickwall) it was a n instant 15 degrees hotter in the room than in the hallway.
I switched rooms and got one on the 7th floor. Rooms are small and functional and both bathrooms were recently renovated, all white, clean and bright and were very nice.
I recently stayed 3 nights at this hotel and can thoroughly recommend it. Its right near Union Square in the heart of all the action, on the Powell Mason cable car line. The room was small but I hear that complaint of most smaller SF hotels so its not really an issue. The room was very clean and modern and had TV, wardrobe, private facilities, phone etc. I would suggest a room not facing the street if you cant stand noise. The cable car line was being serviced so shuttle buses ran instead, which kept the noise down considerably, however there was a bar straight across the road that had live music from 8.30pm-1.30am and people kept coming outside to smoke and chat. Add to that a busker playing sax and the usual street noises and it was quite noisy. However, the staff were very helpful, the room was clean, the price includes a continental breakfast each morning and the hotel is right around the corner from....well...just about everything. Great value.
I spent 5 nights at the Stratford recently.
Excellent value. Tourist class. Rooms a bit small, but
clean and efficient.
30 second walk to Union Square.
Continental breakfast provided.
Only complaint is - water pressure a bit low on upper floors.
Dollar for dolar a great deal.
