The Swiss Alps

We arrived at Briggs Station (Switzerland) around 6AM. The conductor woke us up and gave us breakfast that consists of 2 croissants, gelatin candies and OJ. I did not sleep well at all. Our compartment was switched due to a computer glitched as we were told. DH end up staying in a different compartment. Our compartment has 6 cochettes. There were already 2 college people in our compartment occupying the lower cochettes and agreed to switched to the upper ones to accommodates my kids. That was ...

Stayed Three Extra Days...

from A TripAdvisor Member
My mother and I stayed at this hotel during a two-week trip to Switzerland. We had only planned to stay for four nights and then move on to Lucerne, but we enjoyed the hotel and the area so much that we stayed for the remainder of our trip. Lauterbrunnen is beautiful, situated in a valley between two mountains with several nearby waterfalls, one easily viewed from the hotel. It is a smallish town, but has a few shops, good restaurants (especially the Oberland), and a friendly feel. The walk to Trummelbach Falls is amazingly picturesque, and great excursions to Jungfraujoch, the Schilthorn, and Schynige Platte are nearby. The hotel staff was very friendly and helpful, especially Anni and Indira. Our rooms (we had to switch when we extended our stay) were clean and well-kept. Many Americans stayed there, so there were always people to whom we could talk. During the Tour de France, many of us would gather in the afternoon in the downstairs room with TV, checkers, chess, and the internet. The breakfast was good, though not fancy. The individual rooms do not have telephones or TV, but we were fine without. To echo what others have said about this hotel: it is not meant to be a luxury hotel. It was perfect for us, though: clean, friendly, a good value, and close to some amazing scenery. We would stay there again in a heartbeat!

Helpful staff

Wonderful and helpful people associated with this hotel. When I made the booking in March I mentioned we were coming to Lauterbrunnen to do some geneological work on my wife's family. When I mentioned the name of her ancestor the woman at the desk recognized it and sent me information about the man before we ever arrived. This is the kind of helpfulness you can expect from these people.

Know what to expect!!!!

I was so excited to stay at this hotel after reading all the fabulous reviews on this website! What I failed to take into account is that a "5 dot" rating in a posting does not mean a "5 star" hotel. I had such high expectations which immediately came crashing down upon entry into this hotel.

Our room wasn't ready so we settled into one of the reading rooms to wait and were appalled to find that it was pretty dirty. Then miraculously our room was ready in about 5 minutes, meaning that basically only the sheets could have been changed in that time frame. We weren't told that we were getting a room with BUNK BEDS and when I was shown the tiny cell of a room and the bunk beds I was immediately reminded of summer camp in 1989. The bathroom was in the hallway, no big deal, except that it didn't have a LOCK so anyone could walk in at any time! My husband and I were less than pleased with this initial impression.

We went out for dinner and drinks to get away from the depression of the hotel, only to return for sleep and find that every miniscule sound from the room next door could be heard.....turning over in bed, snoring, talking, etc. Paper-thin walls. Finally after a restless night we were up for a very lean basic breakfast and happily, joyfully, the owners let us check out two days earlier than we had planned because of the bunk bed loophole. I don't know what I would have done if we had had to stay there another 2 days.

I'm sure if I had low expectations that this place would have come as less of a shock to me. As it stands it was the worst place we stayed in our 2 weeks in Europe. If you know what to expect then you might be pleased. Buyer beware!!

Amazing!

Just to echo what others have said here, this place is amazing! My husband and I stayed at the Hotel Staubbach for 2 nights and we didn't want to leave! We had one of the rooms with a balcony that faces the waterfall... heavenly! The room was probably not as fancy as others we stayed in in Europe, but everything is very clean and recently updated. Besides, you are in the mountains and it's very cozy! The staff was helpful and breakfast was good. The view while eating breakfast was amazing also! Just can't say enough good things!

Great place to stay

Spent three days here, only planned for two. It was so nice we extended the stay. Rooms are clean and well appointed. Most important it is quite. Price is great for the area. The staff is friendly and helpful. The hotel is located at the end of town. Awsome view of Staubbach falls. Great walking trail just outside the door. So glad I took the advise from this site and did not stay in Interlaken

Heaven!

Although we're not the kind of people who comeback to places we stayed before, because we always prefer discover new places, i'm sure we'll comeback one day to hotel Staubbach and to Lauterbrunnen.

We've just cameback from Switzerland and the highlight of our wonderfull trip was our staying in the Staubbach hotel.

Lauterbrunnen is the most beautifull places we've ever been with all it's waterfalls, the serenity and the cows...There're a lot of walking oppurtunities, the Trumelbach falls are very recommended and also the walk from Grutschalp to Gimmelwald via Murren. It's also possible to take the trip to Jungfrauch from Lauterbrunnen.

The view from the hotel is wonderfull, especially from the rooms that face the waterfall. In the first night we stayed in the attic room which is small and warm, but it's very valuable and good for short period. later we moved to a room with a blacony that faces the waterfall and it was great.

The staff was very helpull and friendly, especially Anni and Indira who gave us alot of advices for walks around, good restaurants etc..

When we checked in a nice chocolat waited for us on the pillows..

The breakfast is one of the best we eated in the small hotels in Swiss.

There is also a nich lounge with t.v, internet and table games.

The hotel is very warmly decorated and makes you feel like home.

We would defintely come back again!

Loved it

My favorite place to stay

from Schuett.
I went to Switzerland in 2000 for the first time and stayed in Lauterbrunnen at another hotel that was not as nice (will not name names) but remembered looking at this hotel and thinking that I'd try to stay there the next time.

Well, 2004 came around and my husband and I went to Switzerland and reserved a stay for 3 nights (so we could get a balcony room). Let's just say that we were supposed to goto Austria for a few days after Lauterbrunnen and we cancelled that and just stayed at this hotel for the rest of our trip (another 3 days).

You can't beat the price, you can't beat the view (the mountains, the waterfall that's lit up at night, the valley, the greenery . . . .) plus, we were there during some festival where they brought the cows home from this hills and we watched the whole thing from our balcony.

Every evening (early), we would go down to the cheese store, pick up a piece of Gruyere, some wine and some chocolate and bring it back to the room as a pre-dinner snack. I honestly think that this town and this hotel are my favorite in the world. I've stayed in some nice hotels in San Francisco, the Monterey Plaza Hotel and Spa, some nice places in Paris . . . but nothing beats the scenery here.

Now I'll admit, if you're looking for a luxury hotel - this is not it. It's a friendly, clean place that's an AMAZING value considering where you are - the base of the ALPS!

Staubbach Hotel

Stayed at the Staubbach in the Fall of 2002. Because the weather was very uncooperative (rainy & windy) and my sister and I both had head colds we spent a great deal of time at our hotel.

We spent the day by the fireplace in the common area family room, covered in blankets and watching TV and reading. We felt the owners were very nice, friendly and made us so comfortable.

They had a great buffet breakfast each morning in the breakfast room with windows looking over the Staubbach Falls. Usual good breakfast, with good coffee, warm bread and helpful staff.

Our room was a corner room looking out over the falls and each morning we awoke to the church bells from the nearby church. We loved it.

Will return definitely and stay here again.

My mother also stayed here on another occassion and she recommended it to me and my sister as a great hotel.

The Staubbach is perfect

from Sweecher
The Staubbach is absolutely perfect. I couldn't have asked for a better hotel. It is located in a small quaint town with the most GORGEOUS views imaginable. The rooms are very nice and so cozy. The hotel is clean. The staff is sooooooo helpful and extremely friendly. The prices are a STEAL for such a great hotel. One of the owners is American which was also helpful since I'm from the U.S.A. I am very picky about where I stay and a good nights sleep on a trip is invaluable to me. I would LIVE at the hotel let alone visit it again. You CANNOT go wrong!
