Our last beautiful Greek Island
Siros is the capitol of the Cyclade Islands. Greece has about 1000 islands divided up into
3 sections. We’ve been visiting the
Cyclade portion. Only 300 of the total
islands are inhabited.
Every island has its own personality. Siros is a bustling commercial and
administrative hub. It has a number of

Syrros Island
Our next stop after Naxos was a short stop on Syrros Island. Syrros was yet another unexpected Grecian gem of an island. Formerly the capital of the Cycladas islands, Syrros looks and acts like a capital city. There are centuries old, grand government buildings, palatial aristocratic mansions, all centered around a lively yet laid back city square. It looks official but official from hundreds of years ago. It almost has the air of a ...
Road to Zaros
... mountains. After a grueling two-hour finale climb up to a prominent saddle, we merged onto one of the main north-south "highways" and descended (with a nice tailwind) into the sprawling city of Heraklion, Crete's largest city. Heraklion was a bit hard to stomach after the laid back mountain charm of Zaros, so we booked a ferry for the next day to Paros Island. Funny thing is, we got on that ferry the next day, but we never made it to Paros. But that's another story ...
Samari Gorge
From the haven of Palaiochora we took a ferry to a little village called Ag. Rhemouli which is the terminus of Crete's famous Samari Gorge. The Samari Gorge is a 16 kilometer chasm carved into the mountains of Southwestern Crete. And when I say chasm, I mean chasm: at its' narrowest point the Gorge is a mere 4 meters wide and over 300 meters tall. Second to the beaches, the Samari Gorge is Crete's most ...
Palaiochora
... being sick, but wonderful. We chose a side route away from the main thoroughfare and we had the road pretty much to ourselves the whole day. We passed several little villages and surprised nearly everyone we saw. The tourist season is pretty much over and cyclists are pretty rare, especially ones with a funky tandem bike and a kid on the front with a pink helmet calling out to all the stray cats. We stopped at a gorge, rode through an old tunnel, ...
