... we got, the more the haze reappeared. Had not missed it while in Austria. Walked to our apartment which is near the old city walls and arena. It is modern in decor after a recent refurbishment. All mod cons and flash. Went to a restaurant suggested by our host, and were lucky with our timing as we virtually went straight in. By the time we were finished people were outside in the street having drinks while waiting their turn. No wonder it is popular with the locals, pizzas were ...

Hallstatt for us too would only be a waypoint on a longer journey halfway across Austria to Vienna that same night. What I will leave you with however is the beauty of the place, or at least what I could catch of it in my photos. Enjoy the virtual vacation and I will see you next in ...

Monday 13th October An easy tourist day today. Had a lovely breakfast and chat with the only other guest who gave us some good pointers for Italy. Walked down to Lake Wolfgang where we got the ferry across, a mere 300m, but I think too cold to swim. Rode up the Schafberg cog railway, originally built in 1893, to the top at 1782 m. The railway is steam driven but we were with one of the new engines that was built in 1995, rather than one of the originals. The ...

... over the lakes. Had a bit of a rest at the top, now bathed in sunshine and set off along the track. There was a cafe/bar where there were a group of cyclists enjoying a beer, at 10.30 am. Continued on and came across plenty of cyclists and walkers on the trail. Descent was very steep in a couple of places and very long compared to the ascent, so it would have been a very tough ride. Crossed the main road that leads to another ...

... the day, we were in the first group of the day to tour the caves.

As per the tours we had taken so far in Austria, the guide gave the tour in both German and English. The tour started with a little history of the caves. The caves have been open to visitors since 1913 (can't imagine hiking through there back then because I am certain they didn't have a guide, walking platforms or any other conveniences we had. We also learned that the ice is formed by water which seeps from ...
