... to see the Neiderwald monument, built in 1877 to commemorate the re-establishment of the German Empire. We could see it as we crossed on the ferry. There is a ski lift that brings people up over the famous Rhine grade vineyards, to the base of the monument. We tried to find that, but found ourselves driving all the way up and missing the lift.

We went to Goelitz and Bautzen this day. We didn't depart from our hotel until after 1pm. Goerlitz was about 1.5 hours from Dresden. We had only about an hour to walk in Gorlitz because mom wanted to visit Bautzen. What a rush!!!! We took the tram in Gorlitz... walked through a nice park... saw the river where Poland was on the opposite side... asked for directions from an old man across the street and he kindly stopped and crossed the road to help ...

... our hotel. I got a piece of bread for 0.99 before boarding the train. I should have reserved a compartment on the train instead or didn't need to pay nine euros for reservation. Anyway it didn't matter since we don't have to be on a tight budget.

Lots of wind turbines in Germany. The train ride to Dresden is lined with wind turbines and trees. This area has no mountains. It looks a little like America. But the houses are different. ...

... There were some old bikes that we rode out in the back yard. It was funny watching everyone have a go. We went out to dinner to a place that had German food I had schnitzel followed by ice cream with cream and smarties. Really enjoying this river cruise. We have met so many nice people. I think there are about 180 guests and we seem to know most of them by now. Most are retired profesionals but there are also a few teenagers and a few young couples. Mostly people are from the States, UK, Australia or Canada. One couple are in the suite that features in all the ads for Viking cruises and Stefan was disappointed that the balcony was not as big as it appears on the ads! However we cracked a couple ...
