    Volunteering! What an experience

... feeling wouldn’t taint my experience of Emmerich or the volunteering either. Fortunately after one and a half hours on a train, looking at the countryside and houses flash by the feeling was virtually gone. The train I was on was heading Emmerich and once I arrived I was picked up by a project co-ordinator, Bernhard, and we headed for my accommodation/dorm room which was a part of the on campus housing of the Rhine Waal University of Applied Sciences ...

The final day just needed a small 'push a little harder'. With the benefit of hindsight, I really don't know how I finished the walk last year. This time I had no blisters, none, zero, zilch, and apart from tired legs, no real pain. Last year I succeeded through the use of heavy duty pain-killers and sheer determination. ... pause was at around 10 miles, then a second at around 15miles, then one every 3-5 miles as necessary. I took notice of the hills this time, maybe because I wasn't in anywhere near as much pain as last year. At the top of one hill, one family had provided seats, a ...

... I'm an honorary Canadian by marriage so I thought i could get away with it.

The second leg, in between breaks, took me up to 15 miles and it was getting warmer. I got slower. After the second break I got to the point where people were patting me on the shoulder and saying 'Je kan het, m'vrouw!' I didn't feel that bad, but I was moving slowly. At 20 miles, I sat and had a good rest, plus some lunch and ibuprofen and it all went a bit better after ...

... started hurting the previous week, and so I took it slowly. It didn't play up. Indeed I had more pain from my old friend Morton's Neuroma, which is similar to a trapped nerve in the toes. Despite two lots of steroid injections, the problem is not cured and they have threatened me with surgery. I'm putting that option off, however, until it becomes unbearable. My wonder-socks were fantastic, and I didn't raise a ...
