The only thing keeping me awake on this 40 minute train ride is the fact that when we arrive I will be surrounded by more cheese than I could possibly imagine. I may have stayed up a bit too late last night but waking up early will be worth it when I'm nibbling on the free cheese samples given out at the famous cheese market in Alkmaar, Netherlands.

The view out of the train window at first seems dreary, but once the gray mist and clouds have been sifted out it's easy to ...

... and "magic mushroom stores" lined all the streets. Although the practices are illegal in the rest of the world, Amsterdam tolerates it because they recognize the fact that it is going to happen anyway. If it's legal, it can be regulated. Even so, I was overly cautious to get on the right train! Everything seemed to be going swimmingly until I went to pick up my coffee which slipped, and went ...

... which I can use to my advantage. The most significant is that to keep Amsterdam from being continually flooded by tidal surges a dyke was built in the 1930's blocking the Zyder Zee from the North Sea and essentially turning this area into a giant fresh water lake because it receives output from I believe the Rhine River. Twice a year they flush the dirty water out of the canals and ...

... about embracing the true traveller spirit by jumping on an overnight bus, something that every long term traveller on a shoestring budget does and gets used to doing. At the same time, sitting on a bus for 11 hours was anything but exciting. The bus ride was surprisingly bearable, thankfully split up by a ferry ride across the English Channel. The rest was endured through several powernaps, albums of music, and lots of thinking – about how lucky I was to find myself where ...
