... in Italy. I only got a tiny taste for the culture. I’ve seen almost none of the interesting landscape or met any curious people. And there’s so many great foods I didn’t get to try! So tonight we’re going out for a last supper. I am going to eat pasta in Italy! I don’t care how stereotypical that is.

All I can say is I hope Greece is a might bit warmer so we can get back on track with this travel. And I ...

First taste of italian traffic

... overtakes you on bends and also crosses onto your side of the road going around the sharp bends on steep mountain roads.. including massive trucks. It was enough to keep anyone awake. We were heading for Elba but it seemed like a long drive. Tricked myself though but first aiming for Lake Tramiseno, then siena and then before we knew it we were at Piombino and about to board the ferry to Elba Island...
Ferry us away

... it was going well. I sat in for a hand for Anita, Dan took over Sara's cards and then I scored. Calvin did better than last time and Anita took the game out completing Phase 10. It was 11pm ish by this time and we had docked at the northern most Greek port, so we popped out on deck to see if we could see any Albanian stowaways trying to get on, we couldn't so we headed off to bed and slept with no intention of getting up for breakfast at 9am!

Off to the beach today, that is pretty much all there is to do in Ancona. Beautiful day though. 30min bus ride to get to the beach. The water was amazing, bright blue with white pebbles.

Got a little burnt! Everyone at the beach was so tanned!!!! even the babies!!!

... to hear lots of Greek around once more!

On board the ferry we received the balm of air-conditioning, and our afternoon and evening was spent eating - reading - playing games (Paul won everything...) - reading - eating - and watching a lively thunderstorm to the north. Finally, we retired to the clammy heat of the van rather late for us and - despite our grave doubts as to the feasibility of the plan - achieved our aim of sleep.

Italy, start of a long haul

Time to disembark and a nice Italian man found me on the car deck, I was looking at my big Europe map trying to work out where next and much to my surprise he starts talking to me. He was amazed I'd just come from Greece as he had worked out I must have driven from England to get there, wished me good luck for the return journey and went on his way. Note to mum again, customs got the man in the battered, starter motor free, Opal Astra estate on my right this time. I know it didn't have a ...

... playing football and having parties, it looked great. The train was a little late getting into Ancona, so I walked as fast as I could to the bus station, and jumped on a bus to the ferry port..... turned out the ferry would be an hour late to leave anyways, so I needn't have rushed. I bagged my seat in the designated 'air seat' area, and no it wasn't an inflatable chair or anything exciting like that. For some bizarre reason ...

Buses, Boats, Trains, Planes, and Cabs Part 2

... didn't know they were in the wrong line....UGH! Happy to be off the boat, we took a quick bus to the train station as the rain status changed from pouring to torrential. As we boarded the train to Pescara, I actually thought that the worst was over, and was excited to be on the last two hour leg before flying out to Frankfurt. We ate lunch, glad to be on the train early and out of the rain, and I took a brief nap. I woke up about 30 minutes later (when we should have already left ...

... a bottle of vodka, but I was feeling the burn on my wallet and had opted not to drink ANY more, so no vodka came my way. I simply put on the ipod, went into antisocial mode, and continued reading. Somewhere around midnight I felt the burn. I'm sure you've all felt it before. The internet burn. I headed downstairs to see what I could cook up, and there it was. The internet. And only 5 euros for 30 minutes! What a bargain! I promptly gathered all the change I had and bought a 30 minute ...
