Split, Croatia richlumWe were really excited to finally get to a Croatian island. We took a ferry from Split to the island of Hvar. It's a really small island where pretty much the only thing to do there is go to the beach. We didn’t have a place to stay booked because we knew about the "sobes." They are apartments locals rent out to tourists for really good deals (especially in October when it’s on the border of shoulder season and off season). The second ...
Hvar, Hvar Island, Croatia mdaa... an hour as they swam amongst the few boats. The sun has been shining all day and we have done absolutely nothing! After breakfast we walked down to the beach, which is just a short walk from where we have parked at the campsite. Then, we played a board game and had lunch, followed by going for a swim in the ocean and relaxing on the rocks. We are about to catch the ferry from our campsite into the small town of Trogir; we can ...
Seget Vranjica, Splitsko-Dalmatinska, Croatia armajor7... 5 Kiwis and 1 Englishman. First order of the day ... beer .. yes beer - they have a bar onboard so all you do is order your drink and say what room number. Dangerous yes, because you just build up your tab slowly. Well the first few beers went down well. We all mingled over lunch and couple more drinks.

Stopping at our first swimming stop we all were full of excitement. Couple of the boys just jumped straight in as soon as the anchor was dumped. Being the first stop, we ...
Split, Croatia davechowie... I was overwhelmed by that all-to-familiar nasal accent... (Split does also appear to be a popular destination with Italians too, though I'm not surprised as it has a very Italian feel to it.) It's a lot more chic than I was expecting... (but in hindsight I'm not too sure exactly what I was expecting!!).

Had an interesting chat to the hostel host, and it seems to be a running theme in the Balkans ...
Split, Croatia travellingjen... street, so I immediately showered and took off with the camera and tripod for some dusktography. The town in itself is beautiful, albeit a little run down because of all the tourists, and consequently the little markets all over the place selling the regular Made in China goods. Don't get me wrong, they sell Croatian artifacts and products as well. And this city is definitely worth a visit, but one full day here should be enough to see all that it has to ...
Split, Croatia dhruvk... it's good for me right. It was a steep climb but nice and I liked the view from the top. These two churches reminded me of my visit to the Anasazi Indian cliff dwellings in the southwest USA. Enough playing with the scooter, so I returned it. I was sad so I bought myself an ice cream It is supposed to be the best around. I tried the Tiramisu flavor. YUMMY is all I have to say. When in Croatia, try the ice cream it is great!
Split, Croatia elaqid... basement of the palace is the best preserved and the walk through it was was fairly intesting. After the palace though anything of any real intrest would require a car or train to get too. Tomorrow's the first day in Venice! Now that should take more than two hours to explore ;)
Split, Croatia steveandkiyo... bus station. After checking into our nice accomodations (Franca refused to stay in a dorm. Just kidding Franca), Franca and I quickly changed into our bathing suits and made our way to the rocky but beautiful beach where we spent the rest of the afternoon. I was happy for Franca because I am sure it was only at this point that it felt like vacation for her. She had a long day of travelling yesterday, an early wake up call today followed by a long bus ride and a ...
Split, Croatia dinovagabond... the water, but judging by how crowded it was, people didn't seem to mind). Split isn't really known for its beaches; it's a major jumping-off point for islands that have much nicer ones. But wherever there's sunshine and water, people will find a way, I suppose. Today, I walked in the opposite direction, towards Marjan Park, to visit the Archeology Museum. After getting lost about a dozen times, I finally found it ...
