... around this beautiful bay. The villas climbing up the walls of the valley look like an awful way to spend your retirement, while the party kids on the super yachts in the harbour look like they have plenty of ideas for spending away the retirement nest egg that morphed into an inheritance. A coffee, coke and Pellegrino was €25, we headed back to Santa Margherita.

... which was then fine but he wasnt having any of it. Later we had a word with the proper Sommelier who was appalled at the wine waiter's behaviour and I think his cards are marked. The surprising thing was that the wine waiter did not call on the Sommelier for advice at the time and he continued to serve the corked bottle of wine to a table of Americans who clearly knew no better!
Apart from such rare interludes we have had good service and food and wine. ...

... and to what I would consider the restaurants “Table #1”; outside, front row with an unobstructed view of the Piazza and the water beyond. A few minutes later another waiter comes to the table and calls me by my first name, Angelo. I say yes and he says his name is also Angelo; Angelo Volpe. He tells us Volpe means fox in English. He proceeds to tell us Michael J. Fox was once his customer and he said Volpe was actually his last name too ...

... the mussels in all their simple glory; she loved them. I had my first taste of real Genovese Pesto, who Mary says invented the sauce. It was wonderful and silky smooth, just like Mary told me it would be. She says they do it all by hand in the traditional way with a mortar and pestle. What a treat. ... 40 minutes. We found a little coffee cafe and had a coffee and a yummy pastry and watched the endless scooters zoom by. I am stunned at how many of them are around and all ages, we even saw an old granny with her skirt flying up revealing stockinged legs zoom around the corner like Evil Kineval. We have decided next time we do this we are getting one, what an awesome way to see places.
