... which was then fine but he wasnt having any of it. Later we had a word with the proper Sommelier who was appalled at the wine waiter's behaviour and I think his cards are marked. The surprising thing was that the wine waiter did not call on the Sommelier for advice at the time and he continued to serve the corked bottle of wine to a table of Americans who clearly knew no better!
Apart from such rare interludes we have had good service and food and wine. ...
... Minestrone, which has pesto added rather than tomato and even though it was loaded with vegetables I loved every bite. For dinner Mary had the Frito, which had fried calamari, white anchovies and shrimp. This was a far cry though from much of the fried calamari we are used to getting. Well with everything we had in common the the 2 hour ride to Portofino went by really quickly. We exited the train to beautiful 75 degree and sunny weather and immediately found a taxi right outside the station that took us the short but winding ride to our hotel. We walked into a room with a gorgeous view of the sea but more on that and Portofino itself tomorrow.
