A good walk.

Note: I uploaded the photos in chronological order to correspond to the story below, but the site decided to rearrange them at will. Hopefully you can figure out what is what and if not, they´re still nice to look at. Enjoy. August 14-16 As it turns out, the train from Milan made stops at all five towns of the Cinque Terre before pulling into La Spezia, but they´re not listed in the schedule that came with my Eurail pass due to their small sizes and even if they were, I doubt I would have rem...

Howdy from Heaven.

Today I moved along my journey to the Cinque Terre. H-o-l-y ****. This place is intensely beautiful. I guess I wasn't thinking about it ahead of time so was hardly prepared to have the train come round a bend and suddenly stare into the most glorious beach setting I think I've had the privilege of seeing. Maybe Puerto Rico or the Bahamas compare. Maybe. But I do not understand why any Europeans would go to San Diego or Miami or LA for the beach. Their backyard pool is spectacular.
So...

Do as Romans Do

Kristin and Megan and another friend traveled to the Italian Riviera, Monterosso Al Mare in the Cinque Terre. They took an afternoon train on Thursday. They were approached by a lady offering rooms as we left the train station in Monterroso. They paid 30 euro per person per night and checked out the next day. They checked into the Hotel Souvenir at 25 euro per person and enjoyed the younger crowd.
Kristin got severe stomach cramps after drinking her usual summertime drink, a Pina Collada. ...

Beachtime in the Italian Riviera

Headed out to the beach on Monterosso New Town. Rented chairs and enjoyed relaxing for the weekend. Four of us rented kayaks to explore good safe sites to jump off the giant marble bolders lining the Ligurian Sea. We really enjoyed our new place to stay, Hotel Souvenir. The city had a large festival cheering on the local soccer team. Lots of children and dogs roaming around for the festival. -- input by Kristin's mom.

The Cinque Terre

The Cinque Terre (meaning, the five lands), a remote chunk of the Italian Riviera, is traffic-free and there is not a museum in sight. Just the sun, sea, sand, wine, and natural Italian coastline. We stayed in Monterosso, which is the best of the five villages, as it has the biggest and most beautiful beaches and the best nightlife. Cinque Terre is gorgeous--we highly recommend it... if you have the time. We stayed at the Hotel Souvenir and met some guys from Halifax, and Chicago Chris. The h...

A MUST visit......

Cinque Terre (5 lands) comprises of 5 fishing villages on the Italian Riviera....Monterosso, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola, and Riomaggiore. I have just said goodbye to Andrew, who is off to somewhere else in Italy. I am staying here until Aug 4th (3 more full days). We have been staying at a superb place called Hotel Souvenir in Monterosso...a great guy named Dave from Australia is staying in our room, and now it is just Dave and I. Cinque Terre is truly dream-like. I recommend that anyone w...

First Day in the Cinque Terra

We left our hotel in Bologna after an unexpected evening. We boarded the train with all our things and headed to the Cinque Terras. However we could of had a big mishap when I (erin) got off the train on the wrong side ans was laughed at by many passenegers. We got off the train and headed for old town where our hotel was located. We quickly changed into our swimsuits and headed for the beach. We got ourselves a umbrella and sun chairs. We were quite were suprised at how cold the water was, b...

The Hike between 5 cities....

Where do I start... it is 8am and we are up and ready to start out on our 5 hour hike between the 5 towns in the Cinque Terra... The trail head is up a hill and we are wondering where do we get out trail cards... Finally we figure it out and we set off... What does this beautiful hike start with? About 500 stairs straight up... After the first 30 min we were covered in sweat and drit and hardly talking to each other... we did not know if we could make to the next town let alone all the way to...

As the traffic had been horrendous yesterday we decided to hit the autostrada and pay the tolls to save our sanity and hightail it to our next destination. 130kms and 10 Euro later we arrived in Santa Margherita Ligure, which is just up the road from Portofino.

This place is a bit larger than we are used to and Italian towns all have small car parks and narrow ...

A week in Italy: Cinque Terre!!

... weird seeing her plate come out but I tried a little fish and it wasn't so bad. I decided to test out the after dinner drink Limonceno (lemoncello) for desert. Whoa! It was much stronger than I have ever had in the US. It was good but one was plenty as my throat was burning from all the alcohol. Then the waiter brought drinks that were on the house... oh lordy. It was a glass of a desert wine, very sweet, but after splitting a bottle of wine, my limonceno, and the wine I was ...
