... and telling Santa that our address for this year had changed, so he knew where to deliver the presents. Being in the snow of course made the job a little easier for him and the reindeers. As always, it was an early start to Christmas Day and the usual excitement. Light snow meant a morning trip to the tobogganing slopes was a perfect way to start the day and work up an appetite for our home cooked Christmas roast dinner. The fact that the bar was open had nothing to ...

We arrived in Werfenweng, Austria on the 22nd December. The place was a magic white winter wonderland. It had snowed the day before, so there was ground covering. We found the apartment which is a lovely Austrian house. We went and organised a ski lesson for the kids and got their gear. We went out for a lovely dinner and walked home in -4. The next day, we road the gondola up the mountain for the kids lesson. There was not much snow ...

... through this we continued along the Rettenbachtal Valley, still with the towering cliffs on either side, but not as narrow, and gradually got wider and lower as we walked steadily, but gently downhill. Plenty of side tributaries to the main river that would be quite something to see crash down the slopes with the spring melt. Not sure that the track would be passable then. Stopped part way along for a break and a snack and took shelter at one of the many shrines we have ...

      A Quick Alpine Retreat

Just southwest of Salzburg in Austria's scenic Salzkammergut lake district was a waypoint in our journey toward Vienna, a place I had only recently heard of but knew we wouldn’t want to miss: Hallstatt. This tiny mountain hamlet lies right between the base of a limestone mountain and the Hallstatter See, a placid alpine lake, making it perhaps the most naturally scenic place on our trip. The town has been inhabited ...
