Still...sitting in this small little Imbiss working on a weird potato dish - Polish froth already amazingly fast behind my throat, surrounded by quiet and submissive looking clientęle, my head still full with Stories of Hope of my fellow campers back in Malbork, having come from the corners of the world in search of a better life while I set out from Amsterdam with my cr*ppy old bike in search of the life of a ...
Toruń (Thorn), located almost in the centre of Poland on the Wisła (Vistula) river, is a birthplace of Mikołaj Kopernik (Nicolaus Copernicus), and its interesting Old Town belongs to the UNESCO World Heritage List.
It takes about 25 minutes to walk from the Toruń Główny main railway station to the city centre, which is situated on the opposite bank of the river. Now, the Vistula river in Toruń is quite large so the bridge that you ...
... lights up. I search for a non-smoking cabin (train is moderately full and my 2 backpacks take up lots of overhead space). Even in non-smoking cabins, people smoke. They just have to leave the cabin (these are couchettes? Which are individual cabins with 8 seats but can only fit 4 – 6 comfortably.). Smoking is in bars, clubs … I can't escape it.
Torun is a striking Gothic town. Unlike Gdansk and much of Poland, Torun was not devastated by bombing in ...
... For me, however, Torun will be remembered for having some of the best ice cream ever (I think I am obsessed with food considering the amount I have written about it in this blog). They have a lot of places that sell ice cream in Poland. A lot of them are just the soft serve machines but this ice cream shop in Torun just looked like it would have good ice cream. And it did. Absolutely amazing. So there you go, another food-filled blog about Poland.
Torun, Central Poland, Poland eileenj... I didn't find any youth hostel in the centre (I've learn afterwards, that there was one...but not in my guide, but foundable in internet), so I staid in one of the hostel...5 times more expensive than the regular youth hostel...ups. But it worthed it, because I had time to see the center the evening and the morning before continuing my trip.
Gniezno, Poland lelaulau... They assure that they'll finish cleaning/organizing the second grave. We give kiss's and get the invitration to come by anytime for tea and pastries. Dad and I go back to the car where it suddenly dawns me, I never took a picture of her and her son. Hmm.. After contemplation, I decide to run back and snap a pick of them. No really, when will I see them again. They were both pleased as punch that I double backed to take a picture of them.
Lipno, Poland kasia-waw... the last 6 months. Filutek is a character that Lengren drew back in the day. Mom used to imitate his style of drawing. Dad and I follow the recommendation of the guy at tourist information and go to Bar Mleczna Malgoszia where I dine on bean soup and golambki. Not bad. We than go back into town where I start looking for a souvenir store ...
Torun, Poland kasia-waw... We get our bearings and find the cementary site. The candles and holder that we left 6 months ago are still there. Impressive. Dad and I do some maintenace on the place. The live flowers are looking too dormant if you know what I mean so we cut them back. There is quite the amount of activity to be had even thou it's not all Saints day yet. By the time we leave, the cementary is a bustle of avtivity and people are fighting for the parking space we are leaving behind. Next stop Torun.
Bydgoszcz, Poland kasia-waw... it wasn't very good. The gingerbread itself was very good. I had some cookies covered in chocolate, opting out of the Copernicus-shaped gingerbread for double the price. I was only in Torun for about 20 hours, which was plenty for this little town. Also, my hostel was a bit weird. Everyone there seemed to be Polish except me. I was in a 12-bed dorm room with 7 other people. At 4:30am one guy ...
Torun, Poland laura1... it had a swimming pool outside as well! Thomson was getting a lot of attention in his SKIRT! Now, I have a lot of respect for his National Dress (Quite literally a ****ing dress as well!), but the guy is wearing a SKIRT! End of! Simon had to pay for ALL drinks for us ALL night as they didn't take switch cards! Thanks god for Mastercard! Good work fella! The Vodka's were flying and 12Z wasn't too bad for this place. We should have stuck to Vodka and Lemonade's as Vodka Red ...
