Overnight in Helsinki

I decided to enter Russia via Finland for several main reasons. First, the trains don't run very often to St. Petersburg and the 7 hr bus ride did not sound very appealing. Next, I still had my Eurail pass which gave me a 50% discount on the ferry and paid for the Finland half of the train trip to St. Petersburg. Oh yeah.. by going through Helsinki …

... mistake.

And that brings me today. I am heading towards Oslo in Norway for a Saturday marathon but I’m going to spend tonight in a smaller town called Karlstad. It's stunning here. . .

As always, here are some interesting facts about the countries I’ve been to.

... br> Monday 17th Sept

Today was a bit of a travel fail... basically I woke at 6.30 and was supposed to get the 8am ferry to Tallinn in Estonia, but I was so tired and lazy I decided to take a later, more expensive one. So I went back to sleep waking up at 10.30, which was when the first other ferry was that I was going to take. So much for that, but it was ok as there was one at 1.30 also. So I rested my eyes just for a ...

There are always some bad ones at the bottom that get squished. She threw some of the peas to the geese and they did like that. A flock of 5 comes screaming in and then did a touch and go. We tried to give them a tortilla but they didn't like it. ...

... was circular and the central part of the roof was made of narrow copper strip, spiralled to form a large circular disk and the outer portion glass panels. Quite a statement. Although we only spent ten minutes inside, we must have upset someone. The city had given up holding the storm at bay and it had thundered in, beginning to dump its load. We timed our outing pretty well though, the heavens didn't really open up until we reached the courtyard of our ...

Historical Traveler Reviews Sokos Hotel Presidentti Helsinki

    Good value for money hotel

    from anonymous

Hotel in the centre of Stockholm, nice breakfast buffet, rooms average but very helpful staff in the reception.

    Would go again.

This hotel offers great value: rooms are modern, beds are really comfortable, staff are helpful and the breakfast buffet is abundant. Also the location is really convenient, close to the railway station and the shops.

    Terrible breakfast

    from Katya_Vlad

It was my second time in Finland, but the first time I stayed in Helsinki for several nights (end of November). Sokos Hotel Presidentti (formerly, Ramada hotel, so do not be confused when you see Ramada on top of ratings here and Sokos Presidentti being number 58 or so - it is all one hotel) was not my first choice but it had available rooms at reasonable price, so my Mom and I stayed there. Reception is friendly, although when there are lots of visitors arriving you have to stay in lines as people at the reception are not able to cope with all of them (sometimes, the lines are not friendly :)

Room was ok, no splendid view out of our window, but no noise as well. Not much to say about the room - very ordinary.

Breakfast was a big dissapointment - if you come around 8am you will easily find a place to seat, and no noisy crowds around you. But if you show up around 9 it is overcrowded by visitors, the tables are dirty and it is VERY noisy. I did not like the food at all-same items each day, no variety, very simple, nothing tasty.

Next time I come to Helsinki will probably try to find a more cosy, family-style, hotel as hotel Presidentti is more of a serious business type with lots of people around. For Russians the hint will be - this hotel is like hotel "Rossiya" in Moscow.

    Good value

    from Nicke

This hotel is situated in the centre of Helsinki, very near the big shopping malls. I booked a standard twin room for me and my girlfriend through Hotelclub, getting a very fair discount, making this hotel price worthy.

The reception staff was kind and effective. The huge lobby room has a smokers section and many soft cosy sofas for relaxing while waiting. They also had a special room for storing the luggage after checking out, and a toilet as well.

They have several fast and large lifts which quickly took us to the top floor (8th). The key card could however be a bit tricky to handle as we often had to give it several tries before the lift could take off.

The room was rather simple with no decorations except two rather depressing expressionist paintings. Air conditioning is non-existent and the temperature was around 26 degrees even on a rather cold october day, so we had to sleep with the window partly open. This was however no problem for us as there were not much noise at all from the streets despite being a Saturday night.

They offer single room or twin room. However, we could easily move the beds into a double bed.

The breakfast buffet was ample. But there were lots of people in the restaurant at the peek hour and not so easy finding a good table.

I like the people of Helsinki, although it was a very quick visit for us. The people seem open and many women are beautiful. No need for a taxi, you didn't have to walk far to get where you wanted. From and to the airport you take the Finnair bus (platform 30 at the railway station), it costs €5.20 and it takes you there in about 25-30 minutes.

This hotel was good enough for us for this visit. For a longer visit you might consider the deluxe rooms (might be better and are not much more expensive).

    Great Location

    from bluemoo

This hotel had an excellent location - next to the railway station and only a one minute walk from the centre.

The room was lovely and had a nice en-suite with bath and overhead shower. The tv channels were not so good but hey who's there to watch tv?

Breakfast was a buffet and had an excellent selection including salad, toast, bread, scrambled egg and cereals. The reception staff were also nice and friendly.

Omly minus mark was for the sauna which is only open from 0700 until 1000 and then 1700 until 2000. I don't know why this was but personally I'm having dinner between 5pm and 8pm!

    Otherwise a lovely hotel.

    Wonderful hotel !!!

This hotel was simply wonderful : really nice room with a big TV set, a bath in the bathroom, very good breakfast, helpful and nice staff. Everything was clean and modern, and the location was one of the best in central Helsinki : you had everything near !!! An excellent value !

    Great hotel!

Very good hotel! Very central, practically next to the Railway Station. We had a really posh room for little dosh. Breakfast was plentiful and the service was impeccable.

    Keep it up!
