The shop is empty and staff out the back show no signs of interest in helping me, but after I stand there puzzled for a few seconds a petite Japanese lady suddenly pops up like a robot from where she had apparently been hiding behind one of the counters. I order two croissants and a pain au chocolate, and thank her with a well-pronounced "Merci beaucoup." As I walk out the door I realise too late that ...

By the time we had finished our pizza a party had started at the bar and there were people our age everywhere wearing masquerade masks, this was something we weren't used to as we had hardly seen any souls before this. We danced the night away and eventually passed out in our cabin.

... were three top men, three because you might have money to bribe one but not three. Then a visit to St. Marks, a 11th century Byzantine fantasy of mosaics on the Wallace and ceiling. It has a middle eastern feel with the pointed onion domes and Greek cross interior space. Entrance to the church is free, but there are areas where there is a fee. Our tour didn't include those. BTW - Venice had a different patron saint - St. Theodore - but some Venetians stole the body of St. ...
