... wonderful nature and quick mind. He has been a great help to Ryan in communications with builders and suppliers and just about everybody else in the village who doesnīt speak English, which by my calculations is everyone bar three, two of those three canīt speak any language after 11pm.

There have been certain construction issues largely due to a long employment line of alcoholic builders, in fact, in the few ...

Losing It / Crossing Slovakia

It took all morning to pack up the tent and wash and dry Eartha's sleeping bag. The Hungarian campers helped with packing the tent, having been entertained for the past few days by the children. The kids had been putting on bagaboo (hand puppet) shows for them. Whilst we packed, Saskia and Eartha spent an hour washing up the breakfast things, pretending to be Saggy Grandmothers i.e. Little Daft Old Ladies. It was very funny.

It took an hour to get out of Zakopane, due to the tourist ...

... full and anticipation swelling fo r a solid day of hiking, we reach the car park already swarmed with other hikers. The mountains in the distance for which we are headed rise out of the mass of verdant forest sprouting like crumbling coffee cake. The ridges are a mass of boulders, chasms, and deep lined scars that threaten to come tumbling down if not for the clouds keeping them tethered and suspended. We hike through the forest and along the edges of waterfalls crashing down through ...

Accidentally arriving in Slovakia

... late, once we're up and showered, we head to the only lonely planet point of interest... zilina has a castle. We walk back down to the square where Tesco is and get a view over the town: We follow the road along the river, and eventually we can see the castle. The river is huge: We get a photo of us ...

Poland- back to my roots!

... eating under, and water was rushing in underneaeth. Dilemma: ALL of our umbrellas and jackets were on, or better yet, UNDER the bus since it had been gorgeous so far. And the bus was way down the hill! I took off a few minutes sooner in order to try and find a shop selling shot glasses saying Slovak on them. Thus far I had gotten a pair from every country- one for me, and one for my sis for our collections. It was neat ...

Snowboarding Drinking and New Years

... Everyone got quite smashed and it was funny to watch Raffaello on absinth. had some real good drunken deep conversations and then fell asleep. Next day ************e managed to get up at 6:45, but I did and am proud. It had been snowing all night so the fresh snow on the mountain was something I haven't seen in years. I felt like in heaven goin on my freerides with drum n bass pumping through my ear canals. Did a few rails and knocked ...

... to it. People were stumbling around, clearly smashed, urinating against anything vertical, sleeping on the ground, shouting loudly at nothing in particular and generally being rowdy without any official intervention. No one was being stupid though, so the police just let them be. We decided we'd had enough, so we stumbled off into the night. Fortunately we only had about a 30 minute walk to Janko's apartment, where we managed to fall asleep without difficulty.

... dancing - Jane and I had to kick things off together, then we each danced with the Lord and Lady, then with our mothers/fathers and by that time other people had mercifully joined us on the dance floor. This is proper dancing too, by the way, not nightclub dancing, so all the Slovaks were experts and all the westerners were rubbish. I was much more nervous before the dancing than I was before the ceremony, but it didn't turn out too bad. The gypsy band was just brilliant ...

Gypsies, grannies and family arrivals

... only one bus a week from Budapest into Slovakia. Janko picked her up and dropped her here. She was very excited but a little overwhelmed with everything. She had actually broken her foot a few days earlier in a drunken escapade but didn't get a cast in case it prevented her from being allowed to fly. Her main concern was whether her swollen foot would fit into her shoes for the wedding. We stayed up chatting then let Louise, who had been up since 3am to catch her flight get some sleep.
