This morning, we awoke and left Sinaia in order to drive the 50km to Bran, where we would find Bran Castle. The sky was overcast and it was quite chilly, but we thought it was the perfect setting to visit the castle most often associated with Dracula. We approached the town and knew we had to be in the right place when we saw a billboard for The Vampire Cafe. I told everyone to be on the lookout for signs directing us to the castle. All of a sudden, Paul said, ...

... You have to know that a restaurant must be good if it is filled with people, but you are the only tourists inside it! And, oh my gosh, was it good! We had Greek chicken soup, schnitzel, and pasta - so yummy!

We returned to our hotel, and we planned for our next day. We were heading to Bran to visit Bran Castle which is associated with the legend of Dracula, and we were determined to find out why.

We hope that you are all well.

The only thing was, it's a little different to Paradise Ice Skating in New Lynn - it's the real deal! No one else was hanging on for dear life like we were and I mean no one! It was hilarious to try ice skating again - every time I realise again just how bad I am! After that we went and got dinner at an Italian restaurant. The food was ...

... a renovated old town and a few huge historical buildings (and the ruins of a castle actually built by Vlad "Dracula" Tepes). We saw the parliament building (largest government building in the world, second only to the Pentagon!) and then got on the road as we were staying in Transylvania that evening. The trip took about 3 hours through beautiful countryside. The further out from the big city you get the more you have to share the roads with horse carts, old men on bikes and flocks ...

... scored the patronymic name "Dracula". He was also known as Vlad Tepes, aka "the Impaler" since his favourite means of dispatch was to skewer his victims on a pole. This history coupled with the very scary looking Bran Castle would have been a walk up start for Mr Stoker. Over a century later, the myth still fascinates the teens of the world, albeit in a more "Dawson's Creek" kind of way.
