We arrived at the campsite, set up and caught the bus to Sevilla. Beautiful city-spacious squares, wonderful buildings, statues, ceramics, palm trees etc and traffic.
We wandered around to get our bearings and discovered that we could get into the cathedral at a reduced rate being pensioners, but the Spanish authorities do not take such things on trust and we did not have our passports with us we did not find out until the next day that Mike could get the ...
... Portuguese and he wasn't going to learn any more for their convenience. He had originally gone there for the fishing but the lakes had dried up! Happy little soul.
The town had a castle, the only building of interest, but there was no sign of it being open to the public...ever. The campsite was very cheap, but like the rest of life you usually get what you pay for, so we left and headed for the Algarve. No photographs!!
We left Lisboa and travelled through miles and miles of open country in which grew cork and olive trees and lots and lots of vines. We visited Evora which is a World Heritage site. It is a walled city with lots of churches, narrow cobbled lanes and Roman ruins.
As we were becoming used to in Portugal, there are quite a few Chinese Bazaars-selling clothes, household goods, electical goods and the sort of stuff you find in Pound Shops in England. Even in a ...
... and so was pushing me along from behind. I had forgotten how good that feels! So last night after a couple of glasses of the red stuff I got myself off fairly early and had quite a good night´s sleep. Another good breakfast and I was away at 9 am swiftly clearing the city outskirts and, as usual, got the first long climb under my belt. From the top I could see two castles in the distance and when I got closer stopped for a couple of photos. I thought it strange that ...
Mérida, Extremadura, Spain and Canary Islands jamie_pete... drought, I´m afraid! I see from my edit screen that it appears I have made a quick trip to Madrid! This is not so! Some default came into operation the other day, and I don´t know how to delete it! I really am just a little north of Seville. Have you thought about my question, my request, about writing to Kevin Rudd? If not, and if you agree that preventing violence by governments is better than cure, then let me encourage ...
Zafra, Extremadura, Spain and Canary Islands donreidFounded by the Romans in 25 BC for its strategic crossroads location, Mérida was our first stop in Extremadura. Now the capital of Extremadura, Mérida, called Augusta Emerita, was the capital of Roman Lusitania (their name for the Iberian Peninsula). Now, the entire town, except for its impressive ruins, looks more or less like a tribute to the Franco era, with 1970s style high rises and unattractive concrete buildings ...
Mérida, Spain and Canary Islands unatierralibre... went under 160, unless the satnav told me that there was a speed camera or unless there was a hill, as the car was a ******* at the the slightest incline it died !!! Three hours later, and we were there. An hour and a half of driving around in circles as we kept missing our Hostal, and we were checked in. Amphitheatre Now the sights here are open Spanish times, morning and arvos, and as it was 38 in the shade, and coming up to 17:00, we purchased ...
Merida, Spain uncle_davros... vineyards, but right now we are in the South central region, called the Extremadura- where all of the terrible conquistadores who tortured native Americans hail from. The mountains are amazing, and the climbs and descents epic! the region is super lush with lots of river valleys and fruit (cherry, quince, orange, mandarin) orchards. It´s almost tropical! HOT!!! Think palm trees and intense sun! Kurt has acquired the world's most amazing farmer's tan; it ...
