Doing God's Work in Sri Lanka (ish)

There's getting it wrong. And then there's getting it spectacularly wrong! It was a week after I'd arrived and the nice Scottish lady who was staying at the same hotel as Ed, the director of the charity I was in Sri Lanka working with, approached him and timidly enquired if "you and your blond friend are....em....how can I put this.." (oh here it comes) "well........men of the cloth, as in religous brothers?". Now I'm not sure if Mrs McTavish wasn't either at the sherry, the cool-aid or both ...

Sigiriya

From Pinnawala, our next destination was Sigiriya. We stayed in the lovely Sigiriya Hotel, with its lawn and pool looking out at the rock itself. 'Giriya' meaning jaws and throat, while 'Sinha' being of course lion, the 600ft rock finds its name. A tiring, but very rewarding climb brings you to the remains of the 477AD fotress capital built by King Kasyapa to protect himself from his brother, having killed their father (King Dhatusena I), and stunning views over the surrounding countryside. T...

Arrive en haut, un mec m'interpelle en me disant eh mais je te connais toi. Je lui dis que j'etais en Inde avant et il me dit oui je t'ai vu a Goa.. Coincidence! Il me tend son bedo, ca fait du bien apres un telle ascencion. Il est accompagne de ses parents, ce sont des francais ...

climbing the big rock - its windy up there

It took about 20 mins from Dambulla caves to Sigirya rock. To get there we went down a little bumpy road , past many hotels and at the end were about 4 hotels a couple of drinks stands and that was it. It was so quiet it was not as i expected at all. We booked into the Flower Inn (Rs 1100) which had huge rooms ( there is a choice of the pink, green or blue room) with 2 double beds and ensuite in each room in a separate building with ...

... women represent apsaras/celestial nymphs. They look incredible, with lots of detail and very clear images. The faces, too, are very detailed, with one woman looking very African. The path outside the frescoes is protected on the outside by a mirror wall, so called because it had a highly polished plaster finish. There’s a lot of ancient graffiti on the wall (altho’ it’s not easy to see), where visitors used to place their comments about the ...

Ancient Cities

... Sri Maha Bodhi- Bodhi means sacred tree and each bodhi around Sri Lanka is covered in all kinds of prayer flags with statues at the bottom of the tree. Most bodhi's have bowls nearby for devotees to gather water with and once they have circled the tree three times, they douse the trunk with water. This particular tree was created from a cutting brought from a tree in India by Princess Sangamitta who introduced Buddha's teachings to Sri Lanka. We arrived ...

When Hornets Attack!

... getting money and defending my breakfast from monkeys (cheeky buggers) I set out to check out Sigiriya. From the bottom Sigiriya is quite impressive. It looks like a massive rock fortress with the remains of a castle on top. The Sigiriya rock is a hardened magma plug from an extinct and long-eroded volcano. It stands high above the surrounding plain, visible for miles in all directions. Most people think it was a monastery ...

Dambulla : Elephants, Temples & Sigiriya

... with our entry tickets (prices had gone up since the company had bought the tickets) we entered the huge complex. The ruined city covers a vast area and we were herded around lots of ruins in various states of repair - there seemed to be hundreds of school kids around - imagine that, on Christmas holiday but taken away on a school trip in full uniform. Anyhow - lots of ruins in the first area - a palace, council buildings, temples, the princess pool, the remnants ...

The best kept secret guesthouse in Asia

Dear travelers, I have just stayed at The Slightly Chilled Guest House, Adam's Peak. I feel Adam's Peak is one of the most beautiful places I have traveled to. I have lived and traveled in many places in Asia and Adam's Peak is a very special place that only gets attention for hiking up Adam's Peak. I also only came here for one night the first time as most travel books only write about climbing up Adam's Peak. It ...

We had a chat with world's shortest chief Jailor- made Jasmine look tall at 5 foot. There are only actually 108 inmates- none of them woman- in a prison designed for 200. However there is also 250 more awaiting trial in a judital system which moves at the same speed as the sloth who has just one the laziest sloth competion ...
