... We then walked on down the hill past some old houses dating from the Meiji period to the old British Consulate. This now contains a museum which we did not have time to visit and a souvenir shop. It was really strange to see shortbread and English sweets along side cups and saucers and Beatrix Potter characters. ... we went to the top of the Hakodate Tower for another great view of the the city. Today the clouds were lower so you couldn't see the top of Mount Hakodate, but you could really see the details of the city and the ports.
