The place is a big sprawling old Haveli, which was still being renovated into a hotel when we arrived but this did not detract from our great experience here. The rooms were large and clean and cheap (300iR per night bartered down from 1000...10/12/12).
The manager, Uhmed, is a very helpful, friendly and sincere proprietor who will do his utmost to help. My friends and I had some lovely evenings sitting with him and his nephew, Prabha, having a meal together. The mosquitoes do get a bit annoying though.

I had never seen a desert so far in my life. Though I have been to Tibet, I am guessing it qualifies more to be barren than a desert. So when we planned a trip to Rajasthan either Jaisalmer or Bikaner had to be on the agenda. We picked Jaisalmer as it seemed to be more touristy and we thought we would rather be in a touristy place. But in hindsight …

... Wranglers? I'm scared to say "jockeys" because hasn't that term become derogatory? For 6 camels for some reason I didn't require a jockey?? There and back in fact and I didn't get the same camel. I guess they saw in me as an avid, majestic camel rider and did not need assistance, right? Camels are strange to get on and off of and you are soooo high up, Gail is afraid of heights so her normally adventurous spirit was curtailed a bit. We saw Peacock, which I ...

... on the steps opposite. I suggested using my Indian cellphone to call up room service, but Mr Vyas junior explained that this would not be satisfactory as the hotel phone rarely worked.

If it all sounds rather random and disorganised, maybe it was – by western standards at least. But we would not for the world have missed it. The atmosphere was amazing; the staff, though few in number were always helpful and did their best to meet our every ...

... but we had to leave. One tip we had been given was too keep all valuables in a small bag and keep it with you at all times. We've been doing that. After Sunny dropped us to the bus station, he dropped Oisin's bag from his boot. This had the laptop and camera in it. The bag fell lens first. Luckily it didn't smash the lens but it smashed a filter which cost 80 euro. Our accom for the week totaled 38 euro. To make matters worse, the bus station was like a feeding pit. ...

... like trees on barren land.

      Khuri Desert Village
It became very apparent that the semi-touristy Khuri village is aimed at domestic visitors, with the elaborate setup of cliche looking desert tents directly outside of the town. Khuri itself is barren and shelterless, a fitting description of a desert town. Accompanied by an elderly french couple, we marched through the village under the harsh sun and on grounds so baked that the only evidence ...
