The place is a big sprawling old Haveli, which was still being renovated into a hotel when we arrived but this did not detract from our great experience here. The rooms were large and clean and cheap (300iR per night bartered down from 1000...10/12/12).
The manager, Uhmed, is a very helpful, friendly and sincere proprietor who will do his utmost to help. My friends and I had some lovely evenings sitting with him and his nephew, Prabha, having a meal together. The mosquitoes do get a bit annoying though.

    Jaisalmer - The Golden City

I had never seen a desert so far in my life. Though I have been to Tibet, I am guessing it qualifies more to be barren than a desert. So when we planned a trip to Rajasthan either Jaisalmer or Bikaner had to be on the agenda. We picked Jaisalmer as it seemed to be more touristy and we thought we would rather be in a touristy place. But in hindsight …

Riding through the desert on a camel with name.

... you know where this is going? Well imagine waking up in the middle of the night to see a silhouette of a hooded man standing over your bed. Let's just say I froze and I mean froze in terror.

When I finally got my heart back to normal levels I looked up and saw two shooting stars, I loved that we didn't have tents and we just slept in beds under the vibrant stars. They were so clear and plentiful.

And that my friends was Jaisalmer and the desert. Big ...

... were kitted with their saddles and off we went back to the mystery village. To our relief the ride was shorter than the previous days lasting about an hour. This time we also got to drive our own camels which was a laugh, applying similar principles to horse riding however pace setting was still very much up to the camel. Having reached the village we unmounted the camel and, due to slightly tender thighs waddled over to the jeep. We arrived back in Jaisalmer just after ...

Me, my camel and the endless Thar

... Ambling along leisurely on a camel's back, life takes an altogether new meaning. The immensity of it all reinforces the smallness of our place in the universal scheme of things.

The desert teaches us to be humble. The harshness of life there teaches us to appreciate the incredible luxuries we have. The cheer of the villagers, despite the harshness , shows us the way to contentment. ...

... in India regardless of religious persuasion. The camel ride was about and hour and a half long, long enough I reckon but not too long. Up and over the dunes we went as the sun was heading toward the horizon which made for some good photo opportunities. We stopped along the way to collect firewood for the evening and my camel, "crazy and lazy", stopped for a munch every now and then. We had made the decision to camp under the stars, a tent option was available but hey, might as well ...
