The place is a big sprawling old Haveli, which was still being renovated into a hotel when we arrived but this did not detract from our great experience here. The rooms were large and clean and cheap (300iR per night bartered down from 1000...10/12/12).
The manager, Uhmed, is a very helpful, friendly and sincere proprietor who will do his utmost to help. My friends and I had some lovely evenings sitting with him and his nephew, Prabha, having a meal together. The mosquitoes do get a bit annoying though.

... out of the sand over the market town below, its like stepping back in time. About 250 families still live within the fort but this is a controversial topic due to the fact that the fort was never built with adequate drainage, so all the water the homes and guesthouses use is causing it to sink into the sand. It's sad to think that something which has stood strong for so long could be gone within our lifetime.
Within the fort there's a beautiful palace with views for ...

After leaving the fortified town we went back to the hotel to spend a couple of hours by the pool before going to the desert. Later on in the afternoon we went into the desert to see the sunset and on the way visited an abounded village called kuldhara, legend has it that all the villages left there houses and belongings overnight and disappeared ...

... she of the grand proportions, would find it impossible to squeeze through !!

Shops sell everything inside, and the experience is to walk into them as they are tiny, full of small corners. But there is vibrant enterprise and thankfully they are not aggressive. They mint money selling "handicrafts" at ridiculous prices to foreign tourists. Good luck to them – who am I to object , especially ...

... the guides told us it was time to remount and move on.

Another hour or so of riding and it was time to stop for lunch. Setting up shop under a tree we were all eager to enjoy some shade as our group of guides set to work preparing a fantastic meal of curries, veg and chapati. It was interesting to watch them prepare the meal, as they would dump out all the pots, pans and plates directly onto the sand and then wipe them 'clean' ...

... street corner. Diwali is supposed to be the festival of light but our lasting memory will be the noise from the firecrackers the children had in abundance. The tall buildings and narrow streets made them sound like bombs. The kids set these off virtually every minute into the early hours. We started the evening wondering how the kids did not hurt themselves, by the end of the night I was wishing they would. November 4th - With most of the shops closed and the streets fairly ...
