This morning was a bit uncertain as we found out that the volcano at Mt Aso near Kumamoto is on alert and access to the crater is closed. It was only that I thought to check the Japanese Bureau of Meteorology website for the Kumamoto forecast that we found this out.

Mt Aso is the largest caldera in the world with a circumference of over 100km so we were looking forward to seeing it and the only reason we were going to Kumamoto which is ...

John had a delicious curry ...

So after a couple of days it was time to set off for my next stop which was to be Kumamoto which is in Kyushu the southern part of Japan, I had a rough plan forming for the next few days and it started with a day trip to Himeji before the long Shinkansen ride South to see the recently reopened castle which was quite a sight, it only reopened in the last few weeks after extensive repairs and restoration and made for an impressive ...

... peony, iris, morning glory, chrysanthemum and sasanqua). There is painstaking detail to the completion of the rooms, including metal etched fixtures. I don't know the name for them but they are beautiful. We went back twice to look at the rooms, we were so impressed.

Today we again visited the castle, in beautiful sunshine! We thought it looked more amazing than yesterday. Around the castle's massive curved walls are many multi-storey turrets and gates, as ...
