Hi Guys, This is the first stop on our round the world trip. Survived the flight after 10 hours, nick was a calming influence after a few bumpy moments! Day 1 - Arrived at the hotel around 4.30pm, to glorious rapture from the inhabitants of Miami. Hotel was really nice and we were 2 minutes from South Beach and Ocean Drive, so slap bang in the …

... there was a little photo session with a baby alligator and a quick walk around the park to see the rest of the crocodilians. Instead, with our departure time rapidly approaching, we headed for the little cafe and dined on swamp fries and a corn dog, both of which were far too small for the price. Kelsey played it smart and ate some trail mix she’d brought and an apple.

Back at the hostel, the three of us were all craving something ...

In the afternoon we bussed it into Downtown and saw the Freedom Tower - which is similar to Ellis Island in New York in that it was the place which processed Cuban immigrants into Florida. It was then into Bayside markets, Paul is convinced we walked through a scene from the opening title sequence of Burn Notice - not saying much really as he thinks ...

Miami

After six weeks amazing weeks in Central America we had to say a sad farewell and head back to the real world. Well, not really the real world as we flew into Miami which is sure as hell NOT the real world!!

I'd actually been to Miami a couple of years ago but I think I had a slightly distorted experience as courtesy of Penguin publishing and I was flown Virgin Upper Class ,stayed at the famous Loews hotel and dined at ...

... celebrities apparently hang out at night. Very pretty art deco buildings. South Beach has the largest collection of art deco buildings in the world.

The afternoon was spent at the beach. Miles of pristine white sand. May seems to be a great time to visit Miami; the beaches are far from crowded and the sand isn't too hot to walk on barefoot. There wasn't a cloud in the sky and the ocean is a lovely blue/green colour. I had never been in such warm water ...

Historical Traveler Reviews Hotel Shelley Miami Beach

    What a great surprise!

    from anonymous

I was surprised to find such an inexpensive rate at a hotel located in South Beach, but I had read some pretty bad reviews. I was expecting the worst, from loud music to moldy rooms.

However, none of that was true. When we arrived, our concierge upgraded us to a king suite, which was one of the best rooms I've ever stayed in - it was cozy and the furniture was cool and simple (not outdated - no floral bedspreads here). The bathroom was a major plus - all redone in marble with a cool shower. The only complaint we would have had is that they didn't wake us up when we asked for a wake up call on both nights.

Just bring your alarm clock! Otherwise, the hotel has such great charm and the location is perfect. Right next to the beach, News Cafe...the hotel is also adjacent to shops like Barneys Co-op, Kenneth Cole, etc too. I would definitely stay here again.

    Where the party starts!

    from anonymous

Definitely the best bang for you bucks. We stayed at this hotel for 2 nights in November. The location was absolutely perfect: 1 block to Ocean Drive, a few to Lincoln Road and the beach was right there!

Everyone around was young and fun, and the nightlife in the area was incredible. The rooms were comfortable and we got a great deal with the price. The free cocktail hours and VIP passes were definitely an added bonus that we werent expecting!!!! This town is a single persons paradise.

    Great location

    from DAR1234

Stayed in a room facing the front and had friends staying in a room way in the back so could compare the two rooms - definitely get a front room overlooking the street. All the other rooms have no view except of the hotel next to you which is very, very close.

No elevator and there are steps going up to the hotel and up to the hallway on the first floor. They charge a $5 resort fee per day/per room. No radio or clock in the room.

Free drinks from 6:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. include a choice of about 6-8 drinks only, with no substitutes. All the drinks are mix drinks with Absolute vodka such as a screwdriver, etc.

Breakfast buffet is average or slightly below. They definitely need a new toaster as it takes almost five minutes to toast a piece of bread.

    Omlettes are $4 extra.

They play music in the lobby all day and all night so all you hear in your room is "boom, boom, boom" from the base.

Great location and a nice porch in front of the hotel to sit on and watch people go by.

Hint on parking - Hotel will park your vehicle for $24 a day or you can park your own vehicle in the parking ramp located at Collins and 13th Street for $8 a day. We parked on a Friday afternoon and picked up our vehicle on Sunday morning for a total of $16.

    Not bad for the money

    from anonymous

We found a bargain at hotel Shelly through a special ad for $25/night during the week. The hotel offered basic accommodations, as these buildings are old Art Deco models. If you need to sleep while you explore South Beach, this is a good place for a low price. The room was kind of small, but had descent king size bed. The bathroom was marble with a shower. The staff was responsive to our needs. Be sure to book a room not near the lobby as techno music is played all night long and the bass beat can be heard. The staff was able to move our room.

The hotel is directly in the center of south beach and is an ideal location to explore the area by foot. Lots of restaurants, clubs, and stores. The Lincoln Road mall is about 10 blocks away.

Special Packing Tip: East of Collins Ave on 13th Street is a public parking garage where you can park for $8 a day.

We would stay here again for that price.

You get what you pay for

    from anonymous

Our hotel room cost us $95/night. I honestly don't even know if I would have paid $29/night if this were another city, but from what I know, that's the way South Beach goes. The majority of the hotels are small & pretty old. We booked ours thru a group (South Beach Group) that gave you free shuttle service to/from Airport, free continental breakfast, free club passes, and free drinks from 6-10. It was a pretty good deal although the club passes have restrictions (which we didn't know) & are very hard to get into....and we are two pretty single girls!! As far as the breakfast....it sucked! Cheerios (and a open pitcher of milk) & blueberry bread were not my idea of breakfast. As far as the hotel goes, our beds were small, hallways were so dim that I couldn't even find the key hole to the door, a horrible musty smell, no shower door (water everywhere), and VERY noisy hallways. The doors must have been paper thin. This was not the roach motel & was ok, but will NEVER stay there again.

    Disappointed with the Shelley

    from anonymous

I had a reservation and informed them of my late arrival. When I arrived with my daughter at 2:00am, there was not a clean room to be found. At 2:30 I was told they would put me up across the street for the night and to come back to them after check out and they would have a room for us. Well, I had to drag my bags back across to them and wait and hour and a half because they were still cleaning the rooms. I did not get a room until 1:30pm. I wasted half a day of my vacation time. The manager first of all could not be reached and when I did get her she was of no help. Totally unprofessional and did nothing to compensate or appease me. Never Again!!!

Best place to stay in Miami beach

    from anonymous

We booked Hotel Shelley through Expedia, it was kind of hard to believe all the free stuff that it was advertised there, also I had never been in South beach before so I was a question about location and hotel accommodations. Sometimes you book something on line and you don't even know what you getting or what to getting into, but let me tell you the Hotel Shelley was our best decision we did. When we arrived to the airport they picked us up with their courtesy bus for free, the driver was very friendly and helpful, he gave us a little info about thing to do in south beach. when we got to the lobby to c/i he took our luggage all the way tofront desk. The receptionist was also very nice to us, we did a booking for a standard room and he even upgraded us to a mini-suite king size for no additional cost. The rooms were fabulous nice cool and clean full of amenities. Lobby nice and cozy and hotel location was right in the middle of everything within walking distance just around the corner from the beach, definitely we were in the right place!. We had a blasting time I was hard for us to leave these place. They had a wonderful happy hour from 6-10pm, I could not believed it, I was free for hotel guest!!!! we met the bartender he gave us free VIP passes for one of the best clubs in South Beach, recommendation etc. I definitely recommend these hotel for those party animals that want to have a blast in south beach!

The idea of having free drinks

We just want to say how pleased we are with the service and attention.

We had a wonderful experience at south beach thanks to shelley hotel at south beach. We will visit again.

    THANK YOU

The best bargain I found was the Shelley Hotel. I have been to Miami Beach a few times and out of all the places I have stayed the best place for your money is The Shelley Hotel. The have free drinks for 4 hours a night...we were able to socialize before we hit the clubs on Washington Ave. After a late night of partying, we woke up to a wonderful continental breakfast of fruit, breads, cereals, coffee and juices. It was the best way to start the day off. We then hit the beach and stores which are only a block away in each direction. An to top it all off...we did not have to pay for transportation either way to the Ft. Lauderdale Airport. So, if you are on a budget, this is the place to book.

    Terrible hotel

    from anonymous

I would not reccomend Hotel Shelley to anyone considering choosing this hotel. It is dirty, bug infested and the service is rude. There were many hotels in the South Beach area which looked ten times better than this hotel. A friend and I stayed here in May of 2002 through a last minute deal with travelocity. For the price we paid, we got a good deal, but for anyone paying full price it would be a sorry waste of money. The outside of the building and the lobby/bar are the only nice things about this place. The hallways are very dark and dirty. The room was much smaller than most hotel rooms, but is okay for just two people. The room was poorly "renovated in 1999."

They must not have bothered to cover the floor while painting the room. The floor was made of a hemp like material twisted in knots which was very painful to walk on with bare feet, also was very disguting and stained. The bathroom which is very pretty has only a glass shower stall but...was INFESTED WITH TINY BUGS. We couldn't leave our hair brushes and tooth brushes out for fear of bugs crawling into them. The telephones seem to be broken at times for the hotels conveinence, making you place more than one call (which costs .50 per local call and sometimes more, and .50 per 800 call {calling card call}) We had ordered a pizza from a place they reccomend down the street and were charged $1.40 for the call. Other times the phone would disconnect and other times when placing a calling card call the buttons wouldn't work....after being charged .50 for the call. The cable, the very little we watched before falling asleep went out here and there for about 30 seconds. The maids didn't always clean our room every day and when they did they took our dirty towels and never gave us clean ones, we had to ask for them.

The continental breakfast isn't much to fill up on...They had two jucies and mainly toast and two cereals. They also didn't keep the little bit they had stocked up well so some days depending on the time you eat you get less. We were fooled into thinking that the hotel offered free shuttle to and from the airport but it is only from the airport. We found out fifteen minutes before leaving we had to take a cab which we hadn't saved any money for ($24.00 to Miami International). We had a great time on our vacation to South Beach but would not suggest hotel shelley to anyone. We did look past the dirtiness of the hotel while we were there but we could not look past the rudeness of the employees, especially after trying to make pleasant conversation. Expect dissapointment if choosing Hotel Shelley!
