Well here i am Kathmandu ... finally! After 3 stops - Melbourne - Phuket, Phuket - Bangkok & Bangkok - Kathmandu i arrived for my trekking adventure.... My flight was great as I has 3 seats to myself - the advantages of being short kicked in and I could stretch out with no worries...! However negotiating Bangkok airport was another matter, with 25 million people coming and going throughout the year its big and busy... While i was waiting for my flight a few fighter planes put on a bit of ...
Kathmandu, Nepal chooklottoThe Hotel we are staying at, The Hotel Shanker, is a hangout for pigeons - no need for alarm clocks here as they give you a wake up call about 5am! I had brekky in the hotel then Kerryn, Helen, Doug, Peter & myself set out on the walk to see the Monkey Temple (which is a buddhist temple) in Swayambhunath. We walked through a lot of back streets to get there and saw what kind of conditions some Nepalese live in -- definite eye-opener. Pigs were bathing in the river used for drinking & ...
Kathmandu, Nepal chooklottoWell, I had a long journal typed and then lost it! This may be short. I had a reaction of tingling hands from the diamox! So today we took 1/2 a pill in the a.m. and p.m. Saturday morning we had the buffet breakfast at the hotel, it was quite good and we found enough to fill us up. It is quite an ornate room we ate in. There are lots of guests at the hotel so the room was quite full. After breakfast we got a taxi to go get our Sita Air tickets at the Medical College. We thought this strange, ...

... But the instructor said I'd be fine. So "c'mon let's get at 'er!" – he said with his own toothless smile. In hindsight, maybe that in itself should have been cause for pause. Nope. Perhaps sometimes logic eludes me too! Funny - some of the kayaking guidance that day was something like, "OK team, let's just stay to the right and hope for the best"! ... his toothless grin glistening in the sun! What the...?!?!<br><br>The late monsoon season made for some awesome rapids – but from ...
Kathmandu, Nepal shelleygrant... Saturday. We were four to an elephant and quite an art to actually get onto it. Unluckily Greg and I were put with an Indian couple and their small baby who screamed the whole of the 2 hour ride. It is any wonder we saw any animals at all but luckily saw 6 of the one horned rhino. Being on the elephant meant we could follow them quite closely as it just tramples down anything in its way.You did have to be very alert though as branches and leaves were whipping you in the face and ...
Kathmandu, Nepal lizcapSo were here safe and sound no thanks to myvacation.co.uk as Emma supposedly didn't have a ticket, after a mare at the airport buying a new ticket the flight was suprisingly great. The food was really yummy we had lots of curries and slept most of the way. Flight from Dehli was delayed slightly and there was a massive queue for the visas so we were suprised to see the guy from the hostel still waiting for us 2 hours late. We only have a 30 day visa so hoping ...
Kathmandu, Nepal chrisandem... kids are here as well of course. As the older kids go off to live their adult lives, more children take their place. I brought some toys and games for them and the kids even loved the boy doll I brought. They were fascinated. I'm glad boys here play with dolls because I didn't know it was an all boys home before I came here. <br><br>The girls orphanage, which is the other half of this orphanage is in the city. The girls really did get the shaft for location. <br ...
Charikot, Nepal joannabee... the fear is there as so many walk around with the futuristic masks as if Armageddon had already come and gone, and they are its last survivors. <br> <br> KP tells me that, "If swine flu came here, Nepal would die."<br> The health care system here is atrocious, non-existent. The government corrupted beyond stagnation and into criminal negligence. <br> <br> Cholera and diarrhea death tolls are reported daily by the newspapers I read after KP has finished reading them. Typically, I'll go on rounds with the other volunteers and doctors, and then spend the rest of the day shadowing Dr. Rajiv. Since it's an orthopedic hospital, the rounds are spent looking at x-rays and examining healing sutures or infections. Until NOH I had never seen an external fixator on a patient, or someone suffering from polio. The health facilities in Nepal ...
Kathmandu, Nepal darredondo... honored the Hindu god Shiva who, legend tells us, liked to take a toke or two of the local ganja. So, cannabis is legal for one day each year in Nepal...for this festival. Of course, I had to go over for a look. Due to the throngs I was not able to get inside to have a look for myself, but outside the crowds, estimated at over one-hundred thousand, were very mellow and calm. Those zany Hindus really know how to party!
