... city. Awesome architecture and canals winding around the city, as I took tons of pictures as always and just enjoyed the city.
Apparently Brugges had a movie made recently with it as a location; I'll have to check it out sometime. The main "art" piece I saw was a Madonna with Child from -the- Michaelangelo from Italy. It was quit nice, as were the countless other paintings and sculptures I saw in that ...
... soldier'. Again, it was pretty sobering, seeing all these graves.
We managed to all get completely soaked today, and it was freezing cold and windy as well, so it wasn't particularly comfortable. After that, it was back to Calais, stopping at one more of the massive French hypermarkets for a few souvenir pieces of food, then back onto the ferry back to Dover.
So, that was the Crumball Rally over! We did ...
... cuisine before (nor was I really aware that they had a particular style of cooking) but I have to say it was one of the tastiest meals I've ever eaten - I was impressed! I had a glass of Sangria to go with it too, and it was sooo good!
We spent the rest of the last evening of the rally in the bar with the others, having a few drinks and a good time. It was a late night too - not getting back til gone 3am! Overall it was a great time, we met some great people and had lots of fun.
Brugge may be a fairy tale city, but the thing they don't tell you is that the whole place smells like french fries! The Flemish like to fry everything from meat to fries to waffles...twice. When we arrived in town, we had JUST missed the beer festival (of course) that had taken place all weekend long. So we did the next best thing, and went to a pub that serves the most Belgian beer. 't Brugge was ...
Brugge, West Flanders, Belgium tommcatt... went for a wander around the Beguinage and the little streets of the city before stopping for lunch in a restaurant on the main square, which was really nice and served local traditional food which was really great.
We wanted to go up the clock-tower but the queue was far too long and we decided that we could go back another day during the week when there weren't so many tourists!
The Christmas market had just started in Bruges so we spent quite a while wandering ...
We went to Ypres on the suggestion of my dad. Ypres is located in Flanders and was a central battle ground during WWI. The town of Ypres seemed to be right in the midst of the fight and was almost completely destroyed in bombings and fires. It is also in this area that the battles of Pashchendale took place. It was one of the most deadly and greusomome places to fight in WWI and many young Canadians lost their lives there.
We got a ...
... started forming in the 12th century and although they devoted themselves to God and the Catholic Church they were not nuns and were able to marry and keep their property. They eventually changed their beliefs and became more of mystics and were eventually thought to be heretics and were condemned by the church. They have since greatly declined in numbers and the Beguinage in Brugge is no longer functional. It is beautiful though ...
Brugge, West Flanders, Belgium ktchris... the beach eating our ice creams, we go into the town and look at the remaining pre-war buildings then stroll back along the promenade to the car. From there we drove inland through the countryside to Bergues. The countryside in this part of France is very familiar as it looks just like you could be driving through parts of England - I guess it's hardly surprising since there is evidence to suggest that we were actually connected to mainland ...
Bergues, Nord-Pas-de-Calais, France travelmonster... reason everything in Amsterdam seems to be emphasised that little bit more. Hmmm enough on that. Anyway, I as I say I did really love Amsterdam - great café's (hmm good coffee!), lovely parks on the outskirts of the city and fantastic museums. The Van Gogh museum was fantastic as it housed around 200 of his paintings. What I really liked about it was that the paintings were arranged in chronological order of his life ...
Amsterdam, Netherlands susan_g... on Ascension Day, a procession takes place along the city's streets, with a knight carrying the relic. A two minute walk away from Burg Square takes you to the Huidenvettersplein. There was everything to love about this small quarter of historic homes, except if you were an English student asked to spell it's name. Many of the homes have been turned into restaurants with al fresco dining, and the warm European summer made it a wonderful place to ...
