... the Crusades. Later decorated with extensive frescoes, it was the burial place of the Pisan upper class for centuries..again it took us at least an hour to wander around this enormous building. It was extensively bombed in WWII and have achieved a monumental task to restore it. graves that survived from the bombing are roman sarcophagi dating from 3rd century AD, sigh, amazing stuff.
Finally ended up at the Duomo, Cathedral. Dominating, impressive white ...
... This little episode was to have a further consequence yesterday when we went to Pisa.
Pisa is only about 25 minutes away or 2 inches on the map, but as train travel is very cheap, we decided to do that instead of taking a car. Our nearest station is about 5 minutes from the apartment and we were going to leave the car there as parking is free. It's only a local station, so we didn't want to take the chance of getting there and the ticket office ...
When we were staying in Florence we decided to see more of the local area so we booked a tour which included the cities of Pisa, Lucca and then at the end of the day we would try some local Tuscany wine. The tour looked really interesting and was available on the day we wanted to go so we decided to book it at our hotel.
