    ... on the backs of the steel and coalmining industry and the Ruhr was at the forefront of the economic boom. When it ended in the early 90’s, coal production collapsed and the mines closed, leading to mass unemployment from which Gelsenkirchen has yet to fully recover. It remains a depressing area to be in and I’m not saying anything new here, the Germans know it too.

    Today I get a lie in!! No school until 9:00 so back to the English norm. Slept well last night but woke up tired so here goes round 2 First we have philosophy and this is surprisingly interesting for half an hour with some translation I completed the task in English. This is the most work I have done to date at German school. Next lesson I spilt from Natasha to help in a year six equivalent class learning how to introduce themselves ...

    ... ever but at least I understand bits. Now the mad dash for the bus and back for some food and a rest before music school. Here I watch and feel asleep in her piano lesson and then listened to her violin thankfully without falling asleep. Then we listen to the string sextet.     ... high end and low end..... And guess what today was the day Rob bought my replacement engagement ring.... It's beautiful, big and unusual...I love it. (of course there is a picture).

    So now I was happy, we had lunch at a little bar (which was like a maize inside).... Rob had black pudding with apple mashed potatoes and fried onion and I had Mettwurst, Sauerkraut and mashed potato. SO yummy.

    Back to the boat for our Ritual nap and push off and head ...

    ... Our tour ended with a walk past many of Amsterdam's "coffee shops" and even at 10.00am you could smell that very distinctive smell! We started cruising in the afternoon and the countryside looks wonderful - very flat, but very productive. Tonight was our welcome dinner - only six courses, but everything was delicious. Tonight we are crossing into Germany, so stay tuned for more from Cologne ...
