Ruins & Rollercoasters, or Robb is a Bad Influence

... the city, its adorable beer taverns, and its gorgeous architecture. But I didn't love it, and I can't quite figure out why. Perhaps I was expecting more, due to the fact that every Germany guidebook touts it as a perfect German fairytale city. But it's also a college town and an industrial town, and the legendary "nightlife" I heard so much about wrapped up at about 10pm. But nonetheless, it's a stunning ...

Castles & Hassles

... cheated.

We arrived in Heidelberg late this afternoon. Heidelberg is the crown jewel town of southwestern Germany- Mark Twain came here and made it famous for Americans, and German artists of every type have sung its praises. I can't disagree, it's stunning. And cold. And I can also FULLY recommend their Thai food, since I discovered I'd rather stick a fork in my eye than partake in more German strudel, shnitzel, or spatzle, so we had a lovely dinner at a Thai joint in ...

Hey Geezer- That's OffenBURG, not Off-my-bag

... they kept saying "sorry" they could do nothing, and continued to ping-pong me around. I finally found a sympathetic official (or maybe he'd read about Americans going "postal") and he made some calls and FINALLY got my bags routed to Basel.

My bags arrived in Basel, where it was a joyous reunion, and we were on to Geneva. When I got them in Basel I literally had 3 minutes to get them downstairs to the train track. About all ...

An easy Walk

Continued down the Main River this morning. Docked at the small town of Aschaffenburg. No tours here; this is not a tourist town. I went off walking by myself since the town was right by the dock. I took the main street through town and found a few old half-timbered buildings. This is not an old or restored town. However, I did ...

Elvis Slept Here

... for the witchhunts in the Middle Ages. Two undred men, women and children were burned at the stake in this town. I walked along the waterfron and returned to the ship.
After dinner a local band performed in the lounge. They played a variety of music and were very entertaining.

Germany? On an African Honeymoon???

... table and watched the festivities while drinking good beers that we'd never heard of before.
The hot spiced wine really took away the chill and we walked around Frankfurt for a while. It's much more scenic than we expected! especially the older parts of the city and the river front.
That night we had a fun dinner with Katie's friend Heather and her boyfriend Sebastien. They took us to a local restaurant with great apple wine!

Markets and a castle

... at in London. Off the side there were little squares with more market stalls. As I walked along, I could see Heidelberg Castle half way up the hill. I came to Kornmarkt and from here I caught a funicular to the castle. From the castle there was a great view of the city and the Nectar River. The castle is partly in ruins. It is a Gothic-Renaissance style fortress and its oldest structures are dated from 1400. A royal Bavarian family lived here for many years. It is ...

Frankfurt, Germany

... of in Delhi - with french fries and a salad. Yum!!). Then we caught a boat for a short cruise down the Rhein. It was so cold, but beautiful. There were cute, quaint little towns along the banks, and castles in the side of the mountain. I was there by myself, so I befriended a couple of girls from Canada for the afternoon. On the way back, we stopped off for a wine tasting. It was very nice. I got a great night's sleep at the hotel, and then the next morning headed ...
