bhatiary golf and country club

... for "sir". then a nice 5-wood and sandwedge. it was a piece of cake. 3-on and 2-putt for par. nice way to shake off the jet lag. hole number 2: 390-yard par 4 this is the mother of all doglegs and the toughest hole on the course with an index=1. you have to hit an iron down a steep mountain without falling all the way down into the creek. when you walk down there (you have to walk because there are no carts in this club and even if they had carts, there is no golf cart ...

flying solo from bangkok to chittagong

december 16, 2006 drove to suvarnabhumi airport in bangkok and parked in the long term parking lot which also serves as "a long way to the terminal" parking lot. they charge 140 baht per day. you have to take a bus to the terminal building. the buses look like they are designed to shuttle airport employees and not passengers so it is a little freaky getting your luggage in and out and trying to figure out where to get off and once off trying to get to the departure lounge ...

First One Day International, Chittagong

Personally, I have always thought of One Day Cricket matches as a game, you sit/lie on your couch, drink beers and get ****** as you watch. Yeah, I have been to a few over the years, but I can't say that they are my favourite form of cricket. Give me a test any day. As there was another strike in Bangers, it was a little hard getting a prickshaw, but eventually we got one, and with me directing the fool of a driver, we arrived in time to see the toss, which once again ...

Back to Chitters

Back in Chittagong we decided that as Andrew and the boys had gone we would go for the lower budget hotel next door. It was a bargain at less than half the price. The people were really friendly too. Should have stayed there before. Plus when we got up for brekky the next morning, without being able to understand much English they brought our order out within about 4 mintues. In the swanky place next door everyone had the same complimentary breakfast everyday for 6 days and they ...

Where The Ships Go

Since the test series had started, we had been hanging out with a few more Aussies who were doing the Waving the Flag tour. Peter, Mel, Paul and Bernie. They were good people from N.S.W. And Victoria, so once the test had finished, we grabbed a prickshaw and went sight seeing, well, just the ship wrecking yards as they are the only thing to see in Chittagong. Finding three prickshaws was hard as the strike had pulled most of them off of the road. Once ...

The Second

Since we have been in Dhaka, we were hanging out at the cricket with a load of guys from a group called waving the flag, (www.wavingtheflag.com) and four Aussie guys from Melbourne. Mick, Scotty, Jason and Kevin. As they were staying in our hotel, we arranged to go down to Chittagong together. There are two ways to get here. Train or bus. The LP reckons that the road is **** and the train is better. The hotel staff recommended the bus, and as the Aussie team were ...

More clauses than Soft Mick

ONE CHALET, NO POTATOES An auspicious opportunity has arisen.  Well, we did tell you that seven years of good fortune has just begun.  We have a spare ticket available for the All Tomorrow's Parties festival at Camber Sanders in East Sussex, 26-28 March.  For those not in the know, ATP is the finest music festival, bar none.  You stay in a Pontins' chalet with a bed, a bathroom, a kitchen, Mr & Mrs R and everyone's favourite goat-herder, Mr Prickett.  The music?  Shellac, Mogwai ...

"Getting a shunting"

Everything has been as easy as pie for the last few days.  England gave Bangladesh a good seeing to on the cricket pitch.  And Bangladeshi hospitality has continued unabated.   The affable Mr Moeiz, a friend of Tonmoy who we met in Dhaka, met us on our second day in Chittagong.  He checked us out of our hotel, packed our bags into his car (wet washing and all) and installed us in his own house.   Over the last 8 days, as ...

"Toilet terror in Bangabandhu Stadium"

Days 8-12:  Cricket.  People are madder for cricket than Soft Mick around these parts.  Despite being on a losing streak akin to Carlisle United's form this season - played 25, lost 24, drew 1 - enthusiasm is endemic among the natives, much as it is in Cumbria.  Mr R's statto credentials have been given a stern seeing to.  "Who were England's opening bowlers in 1992 World Cup Final?" one local enquired.  Bugger knows, we responded.  "Derek Pringle & Angus ...
