Small beach resort

This is my last night in India (sob, sob) and it was nice to spend it in a small peaceful beach side resort. It was as if Dragoman was trying to give us good final days with a late start from Pondicherry and a short drive to Mamallapuram where we stay in a beautiful beachside resort complete with sparkling clean swimming pool. As well as the beach, for the more cultured, it offered a number of temples with stone carvings. The Five Rathas are a set of temples carved from natural rocks. Around ...

All Smiles in Tamil Nadu

... UNESCO world heritage site, followed by Arjuna's Penance, a big wall of rock sculpted into many figures depicting a scene from a Hindu tale. Nearby, we also visited a place called Krishna's Butterball, which is a huge boulder that is somehow balanced on a rockslope. The big boulder has been there for years and apparently, there is no way to move it, despite the best efforts of many. I was not expecting much from the day of sightseeing around the stone carvings, but I ...

A bus ride and a town.

... way) and wanted to listen to my music then her son listened. Her son then puked (not on me though so that's good) and i gave them a plastic bag, a bit too late. It was like a mini- party (doesnt' take much for something to be a party to me though) i felt...it was a really lovely, friendly atmostphere. Before i knew it the 2 hr bus ride was over and the bus driver told me to 'Get out'. That was his way of telling me this is my stop ...

... the outcry if you were on the 73 bus on your way to London Bridge and the driver decided to stop for 20 minutes at Old Street whilst he grabbed some food! Fortunately for us there were some helpful locals aboard who were able to tell us which patch of dirt at the side of the road we needed to get off at when we arrived at Mamallapuram, as maybe indigestion clouded the drivers thought processes but he decided not to actually go into town or the ...

... colors, and capabilities. Nets were in tidy bundles everywhere. Makeshift buoys of styrofoam wrapped in rope sat next to anchors of rocks similarly tied. Motors were covered by tarps or left sitting in the sun weathering. Some boats were painted marvelously, others made of simply three pseudo-carved logs tied together with rope. An old lady was emptying buckets of little tiny fish onto the sand to dry in the sun. Dogs rested in the shade of ...

As he seemed nice enough we followed him to the back entrance of the shop and clambered throught the gate, it was getting dark and on the way Tamsin did some wading that you wouldn't attempt without 2 pairs of waders and industrial marigolds and dunked a sandal and her skirt up to the ankle in their outlet pipe ggghhrrrrrghhhhhhhhh eugh. you'd have though this would make him ...

It's rare for me to be at the seashore to watch the sun rise over the ocean and as I sit in the sand meditating, I celebrate the dawning of a new day! I slowly open my eyes to a gorgeous sun popping up on the horizon and watch the activity of the local fisherman preparing for the day. Some are in the water for their morning bath and to pull in their fishing nets, others are preparing their boats, some ...

Reflections on our time in India

People say that you can not merely 'see' India but are forced to experience it to a greater or lesser extent. This sore fact is now quite apparent to us and I hope to be able to give some impression of the confusing emotions that have been aroused.

The primary and most obvious facet of Indian life that is unavoidably obvious even to the most casual visitor is the level of abject poverty. Any romantic notions of the existence of some sort of genteel poverty are soon dismissed ...

Shore temples and jaw bones

Mamallapuram

On our last morning in Chennai we had a few hours to spare so I took an auto-rickshaw to Fort St George, down by the sea. I had read about this place, used as it was by the British (including Clive of India) as the first base of the East India Trading Company and therefore Britain's first foothold in India. Nowadays, in its modern form, it houses a number of government buildings and a police barracks and it takes a lot of imagination to see it as it may have ...
