We departed Rome on time at 7.50am and had a pleasant rail trip to Venice Mestre station where we changed to a coach for the trip to Villach. Train got up to 250kph in places and there were lots of tunnels. The Coach was very comfortable and the scenery very interesting as we left the plain behind and headed into the mountains. It took about 3 hours to reach Villach and we did not have to wait long to get picked up by Betttina, our home exchange contact. She drove us ...

At several points it was barely paved and shrank down to a single lane for both directions as it snaked through the countryside and eventually the woods. Along the way we will take a few photos and see what we can see to tell you all about. Hope you enjoy the trip with us!

To set the scene, we have included a few photos from last year's trip.

... was spectacular. Cheryl and I took turns taking pictures of each other. Then we had this really nice dude from the Czech Republic take our picture on the “thumb” of 5 Fingers. It was a little nerve wracking walking out on those fingers – made of steel obviously, but hanging so far out over the ground below …. and I'm not great with heights. Nevertheless, we hung out there for a while just because the view was so darn spectacular.

      We finally made ...
