So here we are, getting set for our 2014 Balkan Adventure. After 2 days of ferocious packing and cleaning, as we vacate what has been our Reception, Bar and Restaurant for the last six and a half years, we have collapsed in a heap pending some last minute personal packing and 'making ourselves look beautiful' preparations - so much to do, so little time!

Cheryl and I were up early in order to catch a cab to take us to Obertraun, which is the site of the Dachstein ice caves and 5 Fingers lookout. For some reason I have always wanted to visit an ice cave and Austria game me the perfect opportunity. There was fog on the lake when we got up at 7:00, but when you looked up all you could see was clear blue sky. It was going to be a spectacular day in Hallstatt.

But wait … there's more. As the sun was setting and dusk fell over the lake, we heard a band strike up on a barge in the middle of the lake. All of a sudden we heard singing and dancing and music and yoddling … we couldn't figure out what it was all about, but three songs later they wrapped it up and took off. Last days in Seeboden / Austria
After some on and off rainy days/weeks, I took the opportunity and did a last round trip on Lake Millstaetter See because the summer season will be over on 7 September 2014.
