... the lunch hour began. The builders came in in hordes. Seated, supplied with bread and wine followed by pasta and then time to get back to work. We moved on and later found a great pizza place. Pizzas are good here (unlike Rome). We then followed Fabio's advice and caught the ferry into Como. We spent the afternoon walking about the main part of the city - lovely old buildings, huge Duomo (surprise!!), partially unfinished waterfront, shops ...

We arrived in this beautiful city at dusk so we weren't able to get the most out of it. Stayed there only for one hour and we spent that time in Parco Civico capturing the flickering lights of the city surrounded by mountains. The view from the shores of Lake Lugano was fascinating. I found a small roadside café on a hill overlooking the lake. The expresso was good! I sat there for a while soaking up the sun, but I knew I had a lot of driving to do if I was going to make it to Pisa before dark. Still without a GPS but I had written names of cities and road numbers on a piece of paper as a reference.

... home to a lovely castle up on a hill. However the 3 of us were feeling rather pooped and were quite happy to just sit at a local cafe and have some coffee. Ha! Poor unexplored Varena! We headed back to our little Hotel in Cadenabbia and everyone came up to our room where we shared wine, cheese, bread and salami, and of course enjoyed the magnificent expansive views! While our stay in Lake Como was brief, we certainly enjoyed it and would return in a ...
