In the morning it is still misty and a fine drizzle is coming down. The bike is steering badly so I pull up and discover that the temporary plug in the tyre, inserted back in Anatolia, has started to leak.
I ride very gingerly into the next village where I find a garage with an airline. The tyre is down to one bar. I pump it back up to three and set off for France. There are plenty of ...

... said "this is what it is all about" as I enjoyed the great road, mountainous scenery and flowing twisties. Each turn put me closer to my destination of the highest road in Europe. Passing only a couple of cars and bikes as I approached the summit my Garmin Sat Nav showed that I still had 400 metres to climb. I could see the town church spire and knew my hotel was located next to that in the main square, but could not reach it, in the end very frustrated I rode the wrong way up a street and parked up behind the hotel. You know you are In safe hands when the hotel door has the biker friendly badge Relais Motards (see photo) and a sign saying they ...

Today we had a 20.1km climb at 5.5%. It was overcast but thankfully the rain held off until we were arriving at the campsite. Our SPOT tracker has died today, so unfortunately shows us still in Guilestre! We plan to carb load now as have a huge day tomorrow up the Cime de la Bonette (2802m), a 23.1km climb at 6.5%. Yikes. Also saw our first sign to the finish line in Nice ...

... hour ahead of the estimated time for the slowest rider. Timing stops at this point for the descent, and I seem to be ahead of my usual riding buddies, so I take my time to eat and much as I can, plus a couple of energy gels for good measure then head off to tackle the hairy descent. It's not too bad - like Cotter Rd when the road works were being done. Just there is 21km and a fair few switchbacks to handle. At least the blokes aren't ...
