... we had 7 caddies to begin with, half of them playing golf with us, with a 0 handicap, we wanted to make sure of what we were paying. 600 rupees for green fees, balls and rental, then 100 for each caddy. So we sent all of them off, saying we don't need one, but one still stayed, coaching us and carrying the bag. Eventually his coaching became as annoying as all the town's noises, so we told him to shut up and let us play.
The game tired me out ...

Patna, Bihar, India rakeshibow... did not expect much but to our surprise he took us to the right bus (there were hundreds in this bus station, none labeled in English), woke the driver up for us and went on his merry way. The driver then went about moving seats around to accommodate our gear and said the bus left at 6am, which ordinarily would be a bummer to wait but after what we had been through we were delighted. Perhaps India will be okay after all ...
Patna, Bihar, India garyjampot... it was hot outside, maybe 33-35. Now imagine a big metal bus, with windows sealed in this heat...It was so hot the Indians were sweating and complaining, Arik of course was a waterfall of sweat and even Charis was past the glistening stage. We began to wonder why we left Nepal, or even Canada for that matter! Travel timer: 10 hours in 4 hours of sweating later the bus stopped in a dirty, dusty, ugly hub town for diesel and a ...
Patna, Bihar, India arikandcharis... styles being respresented (among others). And now I'm in Patna, with not much to do but play around on the Internet until my bus to Kathmandu, Nepal arrives. A list? Let's. Best moment in India: Riding for about four hours in what I think was a luggage rack in general class. The cost? Rs./ 60. Worst moment in India: Checking into a sketchy, smelly hotel in Shimla after being lied to by our dodgy porters, who then ...
Patna, Bihar, India waynekreger... got up aroudn 5 am for a brecky stop, and when Malwina reached into her little napsack to get soem eye drops out, she foudn our camera and IPOD were missing! During the night, someone must have opened the bag, and taken out the stuff that was valuable, and closed the bag and put it back. we knew exactly who it was. There was a guy who made a point of sleeping on the ground at the very back of the bus. During the few moments that we slept, he must have discretely gone through ...
Patna, India mrewkowskiAn early morning departure for the airport in Patna for our return flight to Delhi took us across the Indian landscape and some of the worst roads so far. Five hours in the bus was more that we had wanted, but in this land of weak infrastructure it's all the we ...
Patna, India ddfb... was going on - and I am always hesitant to ask - who is who. But that is my job. And in turns out I was in the land-owning, local-government-post-holding, educated-class part of town. It all made sense. So this was not "real" Bihar. But just five minutes down the road was real enough - and that is where all the children I came here to see were living. I met with representatives of ActionAid (an INGO - look them up on the net), local level ...
Samastipur, India bgleixner... than a cycle of time: churning the ages into a deep pit of captured sediment, bones and debris. The feelings that Varanasi churned in us are hard to explain. I don't know that I have ever been in a place that embodied our existence and its inherent, eternal, dynamic paradoxes more. Maybe I'll leave it at that. To draw conclusions or to tell stories seems ineffective. To end sentences seems improper. Already, it is a ...
Varanasi, India longwalktour... of our worries. After 45 minutes suddenly the road cleared there was a complete frenzy of people running to their cars. After the jam cleared we were away, 100km per hour on the wrong side of the road, horn blasting, full beams on dodging oncoming trucks! Made it to the station in the nick of time, got to he platform only to be told " Oh sir yes please the train has been cancelled." ****! After one hour of running back and forth to he station master he told us we ...
