... we started our return trip with a visit to the Arashiyama bamboo forest, which was very pretty but (somewhat expectedly) full of tourists. We also tried some Sakura flavoured ice-cream – sounds nice but tasted awful!

Our flights have been fantastic so far. We leave Tokyo in 40 minutes for a 6 hour 45 min flight to Bangkok. Our 11 hour flight from San Francisco to Tokyo was only 1/3 full so we all could stretch out in 2-3 seats. It is 5:30pm here 2:30 am in Calgary. We should arrive in Bangkok at 11:00 pm ...

Then I witnessed something very special- as day was breaking, I heard a deeply resonating Bong again and again-in a pattern , ending with several extra loud bongs spaced apart by 10 seconds or so.
