After a failed adventure up into the western highlands of Guatemala, we returned to the Gringo Trail, still suffering from blocked sinuses, but excited to see the famous pools of Semuc Chamey. The few days we spent here were some of the best and worst of our time in Guatemala.

Let me start with the best.

... were forced to stop. The road, which looked like it could act as a detour was blocked by rocks and wood that looked like had been placed there by the villagers.

Our driver stopped the van and got out of the vehicle. We waited and waited and waited. Now, this was really reminding us of Asia. All we were missing was live animals on the bus with us and Guatemala could have been Laos! After about 45 minutes of waiting, one of the passengers from Korea left ...

... on retro clothes as everything is under $3. After about an hour of searching through this department store we all compared new items of clothing, people had new shirts jackets and shoes, since I hate shopping I thought I would play it safe with my cream coloured corded hoodie which still has the 1996-97 ski pass attached. For 25cents I now strut around Guatemala in cord. Yep cord, if I didn't stand out enough before.... I do now.

... but of course could be relit unlike a waterlogged torch. At the end of the cave there was a narrow but tall room with a small pool about 2m across. "Who wants to jump?" asked the guide. What?? You could scramble up the rock face at the back of the room and make a 3m jump into the pool provided you were careful not to jump into the other side or low the light of 12 candles. A mad Danish girl went first so David felt obliged ...
