Woke at 7am to our church bells but had a quiet start as we did not have to meet till 10am. Blue skies and warm. We had breakfast then I went shopping with Carol and the other girls in a tiny deli that sold all local meats, cheeses, oils, green tomato paste etc. the others all tried out their Italian while I asked Carol to order our sandwich. We drove to Corfinio where we sat in the main piazza and had coffee before visiting a monastery ...

It is the pistils of these flowers that form the threads of saffron. Where we are heading is near the ...

The previous pope to the current one visited his tomb in L'Aquila and blessed him by placing his papal scarf around his neck. He, too, resigned 30 days later, the only two popes to have resigned.

After an hour's drive we arrived at a beautiful small village called Santi Stefano di Sessanio where Living Italy used ...

... built in the early 13th century. It housed both monks and soldiers. It was part of 800 or so such monasteries spread across Europe. They traded between each other in local produce and first proposed the idea of a united Europe. They moved on to become a sort of banking system offering credit. There is a bit of snow on the distant mountains and a small glacier on a very far one. I spent some time catching up on blog and chatting with some of ...
