Enchanting in Scalea - Wine helps!

... you can find some really nice accommodations.

A real gem I found is Hotel De Rose in Scalea: Scalea is a little village on the Mediterranean Sea, in Calabria. The hotel is renovated and the front desk constantly helped me to tour these ancient lands. The rooms were really charming: enjoy the Hotel De Rose video on YouTube and you’ll understand ...

... a road meant for people who have motion sickness which luckily neither of us do. It reminded me a lot of the roads in Kelowna, except here the roads are much narrower and they have guard rails. Staying in Carpineta was a nice relaxing week, but we were excited to move on to Rome. We said goodbye to the animals and Susan and took our chances on the train in hopes of getting to Rome without any problems.

... the coastal route to Sicily. The famous Amalfi coast lived up to the hype. Breathtaking views from an impossibly built highway, clinging to the sides of shear limestone bluffs. Turqoise waters below heaved wave after wave of onto the rocky coastline. Small hamlets appeared out of nowhere, tucked into gorges eroded out of the rock mass. We've been stealth camping since Salerno (one day south of Napoli), although haven't had a hot ...

... tiny pizzeria in town and got a calzone each. The hotel was cheap as - 35 euro for the both of us! The only downside was that the owner was a muso and played jazz piano for half the night. Ah well... you can't have everything. Calabria is an amazing place! It really opens your eyes to how the other half of Italians live. Especially after coming from the north. It is a rugged mountainous landscape with concrete ghettos, gypsies living under bridges, etc. The poverty ...

One Last Note

... Of course, my train was about to leave but I showed the officer the ticket taker and went on to board my train. I immediately started writing an essay I entitled "My Love/ Hate Relationship with Italy." What I was going to do with it, I am not sure but I felt better just typing away. I noticed our train was a few minutes late to leave, but wasn't sure what the delay was. Suddenly someone tapped me on the shoulder. It was the cabernardi who ...

The Most Beautiful Place in the World

I have been told and read about the Amalfi Coast in Italy-its charm and beauty-- so I was prepared to be disappointed. I wasn't. Without a doubt this is the most beautiful place in Europe, perhaps the world, I have traveled to. I took the train from Naples to Sorrento and had forty-five minutes before my nearly two-hour bus ride to Amalfi. I decided to eat some lunch ...

Amantea - I know. Where?

... but at the end of the meal, we noticed he asked me specifically if the food was good and did not even bother with Sarah. This bizarre impression was probably exacerbated by us laughing so hard for the last thirty or forty minutes, whenever he'd bring out another empty plate for no apparent reason, that the other customers must've thought we were on something. We made sure to leave a big tip and he handed us starfish as a going away present. Sarah was so ...

... clean plate. We try again and think he has understood. Then he brings out my salad and Wende's first course...on 2 plates. Doh! She eats all but one fish stuffed ravioli with crab and shrimp sauce. All of the empty plates are on my side of the table. It appears as if I have finished a basket of bread with oil, a salad, a first course and some of the second course leaving Wende with something akin to table scraps. We ...
