... to purchase too much. One of the optional activities offered while here was a full day's journey to the tip of India, Kanyakumari. Back in the day when wealthy people took the East India ships to the Far East the best cabins (for the shade) were on the Port side going out. For the return trip they were obviously on the Starboard side. So, for people who could afford to choose their cabins they would choose Port out and Starboard home. On their tickets would be stamped PO – SH. They were then referred to as POSH passengers.
