From 17th April 1975, the Khmer Rouge instigated the transformation of Cambodia into a communist state under the horrendous leadership of Pol Pot. Within days Phnom Penh's inhabitants, no matter their age or ability, were forced to march into the countryside to work as slaves for 12-15 hours a day, living off two small meals of watery rice a day.

The stories from other backpackers weren't much better either. Some stories were strange, "you can buy a bazooka and blow up a cow". Others were just awful "If you pay the right person, you can shoot someone on death row" (a backpacker I was talking to in Halong Bay met a really strange guy who did this). Lack of hot water in the bathroom reminded me that I was far away from home. When I called them last night, the reception staff advised that 'there a problem with hot water', and estimated it would be fixed maybe by 7 am. I set the alarm for 7; no hot water at 7:30, at 8, or 8:30... It was tepid at best. I braved a quick shower and hoped for warmer water tonight for washing my hair.
