We woke up in the fog in Passau. Actually, in more ways than one as we had to use the alarm to get us up at 7 am. At 8:30 we took a walking tour of the city. We started in the fog but it gradually burned off and it turned into beautiful sunny day. We attribute this to bringing our heavy raincoats and deciding not to bring sunscreen. Passau was governed by prince-bishops until 1806, so we saw the bishop's ...

... it was interesting and nothing like anything we get in Australia. We set off again on the boat around 10.30am and had a quiet day on the river - just chatting to people, eating and drinking and watching the world go by. Very pleasant. We arrived in Linz around 4 .30pm and took ourselves off for a trip into the main town. Linz is the third largest town in Austria with a population of over 250,000. As we had tied up near the centre of the city, it ...

It was very fun arriving in Passau by bicycle last night, and riding into the city gave us a better appreciation for its position as a city built at the confluence of three rivers -- the Ilz (runs from Switzerland and is known as the black river), the Inn (the strongest current and known as the green river, also key source of prior salt trade and wealth for the city) and the "blue" Danube (our guide said she has lived here ...

Docked at Deggendorf, a town of 30,000, known as the gateway to the Bavarian forest. It is interesting that to the south of the town is a key agricultural area for Germany, which is called Goibodan (located in the fertile valley basin, while to the north of the river is the Bavarian Forest area, including skiing and other mountain activities. We didn’t realize this, but each year this region has a famous festival, the ...

... border with Austria, and also that it's really gorgeous, with many pedestrian streets, colorful buildings and rich architecture. We said hi to the Danube again, but this time the boy had grown a lot since Tuttlingen, not least because of the affluence of the Inn. We found a nice little camping close to the river, and set our tents there, before going into town to have a salad, for a ...
