... locating the B&B booked a couple of days earlier. After a phone call, we were told to head on a zig zagging road up a mountain. This was one of the steepest ascents I have ever driven. The views above and below were spectacular.

Leaving Canfranc Estacion after morning tea and toast with cereal for energy! On the 8:50 bus to Somport I go! My Pilgrimage starts @ 1640m then downward I go from the mountain pass. Our hosts took took us to their favourite restaurant for lunch. Chris being Dutch, we went dutch and had a good meal of mushroom and slow egg, veal with fresh pasta, and cocoa iced parfait with a very good 2011 Domaine Lapeyre madiran. ... We ended up following part of the Tour de France, stopping at Lac de Payolle. This is in the Pyrenees national park. You can camp where you like. Bikers, cyclists, walkers, cars and vans all live happily alongside ponies and cattle. The cows have a leader who wears a bell.
The daytime is high twenties, but the night is chilly. There are two or three souvenir shops and cafes at the edge of the park, but nothing ...

... that I might be in the midst of illness and might come away with more rather than less!!

We went into the old and new churches built on top of the grotto.. Tonight at 9 pm there is as there is every night a procession of pilgrims bearing candles from the grotto... so we are going to go have a look at that later as our hotel is a few minutes walk from there, right in town but I will have to report on that tomorrow....
