          Nice basic 3 star hotel

This is a nice basic 3 star hotel. It has wonderful views over the sea, and a nice pool. There are lots of good places to eat within fifteen to twenty minutes walk. It is about a 30 minute walk from Calvi beach. Our room had a sea view and a balcony. Not all the rooms would have this.

There was no fridge in our room. I'm not sure whether we should have expected this. The wifi was very problematic. It stopped working on the 2nd day, and still wasn't working on the 4th day. When I asked the receptionist about this she said that it had been fixed. She said that she couldn't help me get it going, and there was no offer of follow up. I ended up crawling under the bed, finding the modem behind the bed head, and turning it off and on. The wifi worked after that. I think I could have expected better from the receptionist.

Issy is very tired. She sleeps in. Eventually she gets up and we set off towards Calvi. We pass a cross overlooking the water near the hotel. It seems that this is a memorial to 400 Corsicans who died offshore from here when their boat was torpedoed on 16 August 1918. It is 16 August today. Someone has left a candle next to the memorial.

Issy has decided that we should spend the morning at the beach. We buy the standard package of two sun lounges and a beach umbrella, for half a day. We ask the lady when the half day finishes. She says that it finishes at two o'clock. It is now 11 o'clock. Issy says that this means that we have bought three hours. I think that this means that at …

We sleep late. We decide that this afternoon we will catch a boat to visit the Scandola Nature Reserve. We walk down to the dock and book the trip. We are told that we should be back at the dock half an hour before the boat leaves. Issy is very keen to get an outside seat on the boat, away from the diesel fumes. Issy and boats have sometimes not …

Issy shows me one of the photos she took yesterday of people on the rocks along the waterfront near the hotel. Her camera has a very powerful zoom lens. It can zoom in a lot closer than either of us can see. The photo is of two girls sunbathing. They are topless. She says that she didn't realise that they were topless when she took the photo. I …

It is very hot in the apartment, so I spend most of the night trying to sleep on the couch on the terrace. If I did this in Australia the mosquitoes would eat me alive, but not here. The taxi turns up. We are very relieved.

I thought that we would have the airport to ourselves at 5.30am, but it is crawling with people. We look at the …
