Portugal!

Feeling like a couple of drowned rats since having set ashore on the Continent, we felt it time to head south to Portugal with all haste. Having awoken to another damp morning, in Luarca, we quickly packed up and hit the road. Several hours later, and we found ourselves in Portugal, pitching our tent (the first time since leaving GB) on a pretty much deserted site (save for all ...

Last stop before home

... other than from the coach that took us on our tour. As we left Vigo heading north along a motorway, I realized how green everywhere was compared to when we went to Rojales and the South East of Spain last year. It reminded us both of the Lake District in Cumbria.

voy a vigo

Today I´m headed for Vigo on the Northwest coast. Madrid has been good although tiring. It rained yesterday so I spent the afternoon at the Prado Museum. After that I walked forever, took a few pictures and ate some ice cream. If you´re ever in Madrid I recomend the Museo del Jamon, ham and cheese sandwich + beer = 2euros.

Oysters & Tapas in Vigo

... clean and prep the yacht after arrival in port. Out Captain is very good about getting everyone to work together to complete all the tasks at hand and to avoid a lone steward from being stuck in the laundry room for 18 hours in one day while the deck hands are off work and playing by 2 in the afternoon.

For dinner we ate Tapas in the city as well and returned to the yacht around midnight. We departed for Porto, Portugal a few hours later.

Vigo

Today our port of call was Vigo, Spain. It is in the Galicia region (northwest) and it is quite beautiful. It rains there a lot, but we had a beautiful sunny day. We had hired a guide to show us the area. The highlight of the day for me was going to a castle. It was amazing… both the building and the ...

Four rivers and another cod

... The remains of many small round houses surrounded by a Roman fortification were impressive. It was in Viana that we met up with the piece of cod again. In an earlier blog I had jokingly mentioned the national dish, dried salted cod or Bacalau. Well Viana was holding its annual Bacalau festival. Signs of festivity were everywhere. Garlands and banners, participating restaurants and bars, and the main exhibition hall ...

Run to the sun

... in the pouring rain. It also looked like the towns local hangout for the kids, hundreds were huddled under umbrellas just doing what kids do. Now it wasn't to bad at first and we were just going to rough out the rain for the night and hope the kids didn't stay to late, but we slowly seemed to be attracting attention and a few lads started eyeing up the bikes, I mean right up close while I was in the van cooking! I told them to clear off, well I could have ...

Trip South

... is where people from Spain travel to buy towels (not sure why but they did have lots of towels for sale) and Em & Eric did get a set just to follow the tradition. Tui was a much nicer place and the cathedral was lovely. On the way home we stopped in Baiona an old port city with a cool old fort. We took the walk along the top of the walls (a 3 km walk).

Launderette, here we come

... found it by which time it was 11.30. They wanted 12E for a bed, that's OUTRAGEOUS and smacks of commercialism to me. There are 800 beds in the albergue (it's a seminary actually) that means they are making 9600E a night, and I'd put money on it that they are full for the whole of July and August, at least. So assuming a full house for those two months alone they are making almost 600,000E just in July and August. Some might say that 12E a night to sleep in a major ...
